Indeed. The first time I was in New York, I went to a fast food place and ordered something (forget what) and was asked "would you like chips with that?" That's nice of them, I thought, only to be completely deflated when I got my order to find a small packet of crisps on the plate.

After that I used French fries for my orders.

Ah yes, the old chips versus crisps debate. God knows why they’re called French Fries. Do the French really eat them to that extent? I thought they were the connoisseurs of food?

Actually the Americans are far more pragmatic with language most of the time; they're not afraid to bypass tradition in favour of more sensible usage, for example spelling tonite as opposed to tonight.

....and then the "sensible" part breaks down when we get to "aluminum" :blink:

The generally accepted name for a commercial passenger-carrying aircraft. Alternatively, aircraft seems a good alternative.

Your motor car is a metal box. Do you refer to it as that? Hmmm. 🤔

Those look like scones to me. 😉

This is what a biscuit looks like.

If biscuits are coming into the conversation, I'd like to add that an "apron" is something I put on if I'm doing a bit of baking. So how did the aviation version gets it's name?

Models walk down a runway I believe. Can't get my head around that one! 😉

@Chock might have your answer.

A lot of the British still call a Vacuum Cleaner a Hoover. My mum called the Electrolux cylinder cleaner a Hoover, maybe that's a tube cleaner.

A long time ago work colleagues would say something like "do you think he has the technical ability to be able to solve the problem?", the response might have been "oh yeah, he's pretty hot" or "he's switched on", which takes on a different meaning these days with female colleagues.

If it's not shaped like a tube then it doesn't qualify. I was ready for someone to mention GA aircraft. :wink:
