Why call airliners tubeliners?

Recommended Posts

Hey!  We're not the ones calling a cookie a biscuit!  I'd hate to think what you call a biscuit! 🤪

Perhaps one of the few airliners that truly deserved to be referred to as a tubeliner was the Swearingen Metro. On my only two flights in this type, being 6ft 4ins tall, I was almost on all fours in the aisle making my way to my seat. Luckily I was a lot younger and more nimble in those days!

Bill

Hi Bill, You stole my thunder there, was just about to write something similar. I'm also well over 6ft, and have flown in the Metro many times, when working on a flyin/flyout basis. The most uncomfortable flights I've ever done. They truly are a tube, and a very small one at that.

Cheers

Bisquits in a basket

Those look like scones to me. 😉

This is what a biscuit looks like.

We’d call a biscuit a biscuit because it’s not a cookie! 🤣🤣

Cookies on this side of the pond are generally bigger and softer than a biscuit. On researching this just now, I discovered the origins of the words might suggest that we are correct - the word ‘cookie’ apparently comes from the Dutch word ‘koekje’ meaning a small cake which was cooked to test the temperature of an oven before cooking a full sized cake; the word ‘biscuit’ on the other hand apparently originated from two Latin words ‘bis’ (twice) and ‘coquere’ (to cook)  which basically means twice baked. Thus a biscuit, which is usually firmer than a cookie, is ideal for dipping in a cup of tea (or coffee)!!

How did we get here from tubeliners?🤣

I was thinking the very same thing. Tomorrow’s deviation from the topic will discuss chipped potatoes or as we call them ... chips! Not French Fries.

Whoops, now I’ve done it. 🤣

We’ll try not to get started on the fact that in the southern US states they pour gravy on those biscuits (scones) from Charlie’s basket and eat them with crispy bacon for breakfast!! Much better with clotted cream and jam!

although perhaps not for breakfast...

My take on tubeliners is that it is indeed a slightly derogatory term for the generic look of modern airliners emanating from (mainly) those simmers who study IFR: I Follow Roads

The problem, as I see it, is that the British never learned to speak proper English. Just ask anyone in New York.

Maybe tomorrow's discussion can be about what we put on our French Fries?  Ketchup ,catsup, mayonnaise, malt vinegar, gravy?  Best I've seen was up in Montreal.....Fries drenched in duck gravy and duck confit. Poutine!

Crikey!  We've gone from tubeliners to Martha Stewart 🤪

Vinegar would be the most popular choice over here. Not sure what catsup is. Personally I love a chip butty. What's that? Chips between two slices of well buttered bread. Yum yum! 😁

Indeed. The first time I was in New York, I went to a fast food place and ordered something (forget what) and was asked "would you like chips with that?" That's nice of them, I thought, only to be completely deflated when I got my order to find a small packet of crisps on the plate.

After that I used French fries for my orders.
