dont know much about x-vision. maybe. Ive avoided products that Laminar have explicitly stated devs shouldnt ship, that sounds like a recipe for problems

To be fair I must say that I haven't experienced a single issue with it. And boy, it really transforms the sim! It is now sold as being Vulkan compatible. Maybe they've removed some of the features?

We agree that's all windows is good for.

I just dont find it particularly good at even that, and like to use my PC for a lot more.

In fact this vid from mid 2019 pretty much summarises my entire experience with X-Plane on windows.

(windows box was roughly 5 years newer and probably $500 more expensive than my Linux box at that time)

in fact the last straw for me on that windows box is when i spent a week with a non functioning start menu

and it was replaced with a mac mini.

I think you just have some great distaste for MS and windows. So far i have had few if any issues with WIN10 and xplane, and I think very little of money grabbing MS$ but as I said, Linux has nothing to offer me for xplane. If it did I would have moved, and I started with red hat back many years ago. Showing my age.

unjustified

I keep a copy of windows 7 on hand

Its just that everything MS has done since they  laid off almost the entire Windows Test team has been "unexpectedly" total hot garbage.

Meanwhile compute continues to grow at an exponential rate without them.

Thats nice but that doesnt make addons work on linux, and doesnt make it any easier for users, its the developers you need to convince. Once you remove most of the c... out of win10 its not bad. Most uysers want to click install and run, and for teh most part as you have proven Linus doesnt work that way. Mind you i did help a mate of mine install linux on a laptop over skype.

no easier than installing Linux, and yeah, my 2012 PC wasn't "bad", its just dated 9 years on.

You open this link

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.laminarresearch.x_plane10&hl=en&gl=US

you click "install", and BAM, just like that Xplane is installable on billions of Linux computers (1.5 Billion boxes shipped last year alone)

How much easier do you need it to be?

If "Oibaf drivers" means "Mesa" on Ubuntu, then yes, the original Enhanced Cloudscapes plugin works with those. I exclusively use them in OpenGL mode though.

Yes the Mesa , EC is not working well with them , do not see clouds , get artefacts , tried installing the proprietary ones and no go , so sticking with oibaf.

I was wondering...... All x-vision seems to do is modify a bunch of shaders and textures. It also installs an lua script. You run it before you start XP. You don't need it on whilst XP is running. Couldn't I just copy and paste the modified files from my XP install into Linux? ( I can answer my own question by trying it!😀)

Theres more than just X-Vision that for me swings the balance in favour of Windows no matter how high the performance gain is in Linux though. Traffic Global and Active Sky to name just two. (And dare I mention it? MSFS!😂)

PS Is there a way to make XP in Linux reference my entire XP Windows custom scenery folder? (About 2TB). ie the equivalent of shortcuts in Windows?

I will tell you a secret , X-vision (pre Vulkan version) worked in linux , what you need to do is copy "X-plane.exe" from windows XP install to the LInux XP install ,  apt install WINE

"wine X-vision.exe" and give it a path to the .exe that you have copied and it should run.   I do not have the Vulkan version so here i can't say if it will work.

you can create hardlinks to the Custom Scenery.

Both my Windows version XP and Linux version XP are sitting on the same 2TB which is a NTFS partition.

BTW I am surprised that my XP Linux in vulkan is running way better than the windows version. This is the first run of Vulkan XP in Linux for me.

In windows version loading KJRB i will see 15 fps but in linux it's straight 29 fps , same with KLAX and other highly populated areas. At first I thought it's a placebo but it don't look like.

How please?

As for FPS I can't say. I can't be bothered to load another fresh copy in Windows and my existing copy is so heavily modded it's impossible to compare the two. Having said that, it's running just great in Linux with the settings I like. (35 FPS flying round EGLL) But I'd forgotten just how dreadful default XP looks.🥵 As a result I expect I will be sticking with Windows.

I would suggest to keep the same settings and check the fps ?  right now for me it's way above what windows can offer using exactly the same settings and everything is the same like location / aircraft , the only difference is that I can't use Enhanced cloudscapes in Linux causing me issues. But as a CAVOK condition it's way ahead.

The only thing for me rebooting to access DCS / il2 / AC / DR / Arma if these worked in linux that would be great, maybe when ED releases 2.7 Vulkan DCS i would try it in linux.

Well I'd need to install another fresh copy in windows again in order to do it. As I mentioned my existing Windows copy is very heavily modded with addons of all types and sorts. I may get round to doing it. To be honest I don't really care much what the FPS is as long as I don't notice anything untoward.
