I meant in MSFS I look at outside temperature gauges in all Carenado airplanes. If there  are visible clouds I climb to altitude where temperature shows above 0C to and stay there.

Then state "in MSFS".  Your post I referred to did not specify in MSFS.

You should see if there is an admin position open.  😉

I have found I can turn all the various de-icing options on and off with the mobile companion app on another device but whether they do anything is another matter never tested it.  The in cockpit switch seems inop or only partially working.

What app is that?

Also, the tone of the replies on some of these posts isn't too friendly. Why get into nit-picking over someone's reply? I was looking for a friendly community for MSFS, have I come to the wrong place?

No you haven't. Lots of helpful advice here. Some deliver it in a different style to others. Welcome to AvSim. 👍

MSFS Mobile Companion App
MSFS Mobile Companion App is a tool that allows you to control essential aircraft instruments such as NAV/COM frequencies, autopilot, or lights using almost any mobile device. The MSFS Mobile Companion App is free to use.

Don't install the app on your mobile device. Download and run it on your PC. This creates a local web server to which you connect from your mobile device via an IP address.

MSFS Mobile Companion App features:

  • Moving Map (Open Street Maps).
  • Load flight plan into the map.
  • NAV 1/2 frequency and OBS 1/2 selection.
  • ADF frequency and ADF card selection.
  • COM 1/2 and transponder selection.
  • Autopilot with altitude, vertical speed, and airspeed settings.
  • Gyro drift and altimeter pressure settings.
  • Light controls.
  • Pitot heat and deicing controls.
  • Landing ratings (vertical speed at touchdown).
  • Simulation rate controls.

Everyone is welcome at Avsim, and that means all human life is here on Avsim like it is with everywhere else, so that includes the tools sometimes. But don't let it put you off.

Think of it like going shopping, sometimes there are rude people who bash into you in a shop, but most people don't, and so you ignore the occasional twonk and can still get what you want from the shop. It's a fact that some people take on a belligerent persona when they get behind the wheel of a car, some people do that when they sit at a keyboard. Most of those people wouldn't dream of being like that in person, because they'd get a smack in the chops lol, so don't worry about it too much because they're probably not like that in real life.

So if someone comes out with some nonsense or is rude or whatever on a thread on Avsim, either ignore it, or if you prefer, grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy watching the train wreck occur. 🤣

Back on topic, the icing on the planes in MSFS is visually way over the top on the external views; it was done like that to show off the wow factor of the sim being able to do it. Presumably at some point they'll tone it down a bit, in the meantime it can be turned off visual effect-wise, or aerodynamic-effect-wise in the sim.

But to be clear on it in real life, icing can occur in even what appears to be warm conditions. Lots of conditions can cause it, most surprisingly the temperature of the aeroplane's skin, which can sometimes be a good deal colder than the surrounding air temperature. In those circumstances, since there always is some moisture in the air, it can and sometimes will freeze when it contacts the aeroplane's skin.

This is one of the reasons why that terrible movie Signs, is laughable. The aliens in that movie are 'burned' by coming into contact with water, yet they are going around naked on a planet with an atmosphere that has about three percent water in it, yet they decided it was a good idea to invade a planet that is covered in the stuff without wearing spacesuits, or bringing guns for that matter. Not to mention the fact that they apparently think it's a good idea to put visual navigation markers in crops; locations which literally have the perfect defence system against them, in the form of a water irrigation spray system. So as ever the real twist in most M Night Shyamalan movies, is that he keeps on getting hired to write scripts and make films. 🤣

Anyway, to lighten the mood, here we go with something that is truly terrible, but bizarrely entertaining as well, a bit like watching that train wreck. Yo, VIP...

The airframe should also not ice up like that.  I thought they fixed that in the default aircraft.

It looks like a snowball haha.

Can you imagine what that aircraft would weigh with all that airframe ice on it?

Most of us are friendly, some take the "sim" way too seriously, and some as you see will nitpick the smallest thing! Ignore, move on, and chat with those of us who chill out and enjoy the sim. Welcome.
