My experience with X-Plane 11.52

Featured Replies

Hello dear avsimers,

Luckily I was able to purchase X-Plane for a price reduction of 40% on Steam. Full of expectations, I immediately adjusted all the settings for my setup. Of course, I also activated the Vulkan API. After a few flights in the well-made Cessna 172 Skyhawk, I took a flight with the Default 737. During the climb, the game froze. The game no longer responded to input but had to be canceled via the task manager. It's about version 11.52r1. I've read that many other users also have problems with the new update.

The next time I tried to take the flight, It always cached at nearly the same point inflight. After resuming the memory status before the crash, I was then able to experience the device loss bug in the Vulkan-API. I have to say that I have a new PC at the start. I uninstalled Northon Antivirus on it. I also switched off the AI flight display. After I switched to OpenGL, there were no more freezes. At least one flight so far.

All in all, I have to say that I am a little disappointed with X-Plane 11 and Laminar Research. As a newcomer to X-Plane, I no longer have any real confidence in the software. I have never experienced such crashes with FSX. I think it's a shame to be forced to only use X-Plane with OpenGL, since the main feature of the new release is precisely the Vulkan-API. I am also not that convinced of LR's communication with users.

like the look of the game very much and the Default 737 and the Cessna 172 are great. That must be said. I also like the graphics very much. I hope that LR will bring out a more stable version again in the future, because in addition to MSFS2020, X-Plane is worth a change. Unfortunately, I cannot invest a cent in add-ons because I simply have no confidence in the software anymore.

Best regards

Chris

Is it a NVidia ?

Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus

FWIW.

The only time that I got this device loss bug was when I overclocked my system just a wee bit too much. This was last month, and it has been the only time in my 4 years of intens X-Planing.

There are extensive writeups in - ahem - another forum for X-Plane about the "device loss errors". They were a big problem in the initial phase of the VULKAN rollout, and still occur for some people. Laminar is working on further curtailing them, but in general it can be said that they are due to the users failure to set up their system correctly. Top reasons are:

1.) Overclocking hardware

2.) Outdated drivers

3.) Incompatible/Illegal plugins (manipulating off-limit datarefs and art controls).

Cheers, Jan

This is a common experience. X plane hanging and CTDs have been reported across all systems, Intel, Amd, Nvidia etc, overclock or no overclock. Nothing has been pinpointed because it's completely random and a Developer coding bug. This bug has been happening all throughout Vulkan betas but they ignored the complaints and released official 11.50 way before it was ready, because of the sudden and unexpected release of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Since then XP 11.50 has been pretty much put on ice, except for a couple of minor releases with fixes for such minor things hardly of any relevance. Meanwhile paying customers are stuck with a Buggy Vulkan with random CTD's and bad performance.

I am using XP11.52rc1 as updated by Steam and had none of the issues the OP reported.  I think rather than just posted a complain and expressed disappointment, perhaps the OP should try to find out what's different about his system and the community can help.  @Greazer you posted about the release of 11.50 due to MSFS2020? 11.50 was released way before MSFS2020, so I don't see the connection.  XP11 and may be 12 target a different audience, for casual and sim newbie, MSFS2020 appeals other than that that Sim still has a long way to go, that is if MS/ASOBO actually commits to a real SDK to allow development of real aircraft models.

X Plane 11.50 Final - release date: Sep 10, 2020
MSFS Final - release date: Aug 18, 2020

Maybe you should check facts before making embarrassing statements.

How come I do not have any Device loss errors anymore ?

Me neither - not a single crash or device loss error since November or so...

Pretty sure neither of you have flown the default 737 since then either?

The sim itself is mostly rock solid now, with a few remaining known issues that are being worked on.

The quality of the aircraft, otoh, varies wildly. The default 744 is very broken, most of the other defaults (except the 172) have significant bugs, not sure about the 734, never really flown it

you will also generally find more complaints than praise for a lot of the payware.

There are however a lot of real gems out there, freeware and payware, which will easily consume your entire life.

Default aircraft are rarely a " good" representation of the real ones. MSFS C152 feels nice.

iniBuilds A300, Zibo 737 (and soon LevelUp) are *stunning* visually and soundwise. A300 need some tweaking on flight model (climbing at +2500 feet @ FL330??). Ofcourse also IXEG 737 classic ( @Janov 😉), and FlightFactor A320. Altough I feel those could use a little TLC model, texture (PBR) wise.

lets not leave out the tbm900 (payware) and 744 mods (if you want to get neck deep in the x of xplane)

I didnt really want to name them, because there are sooooo many someones always unnecessarily going to get left out.

Only default plane I fly is the 172 and have updated flight model for that, and for realism cant go past the Les Saab 340 being having a blast with it with recent update, still some little bugs but this we can fly by the numbers.

Learnt to fly procedures in the SSG Ejets 170 even with the few bugs it has, taught me lots.

11.52 still falls back to OpenGL every 3rd start or so.
