Greetings all,

I understand this is an old thread, but since 30 Apr 2021, my purchases with PayPal on SimMarket have not been completed and are in a Pending state. According to PayPal, the issue is they are waiting on information (maybe more than just my transaction) from SimMarket and cannot (or will not) complete the transaction. I've opened ticket after ticket with SimMarket only to have them immediately closed with the response  "the problem is on Paypal side. Paypal refused your transaction to us so we didn't receive your money. Please conatct Paypal to resolve your issue." Notwithstanding the issue with SimMarket, I've been using PayPal since this transaction for several vendors (including Orbx) with no issues whatsoever and in my 15 years as a SimMarket client, have not experienced this. So, is anyone else having this issue with SimMarket? I don't want to use my credit card on their site.

Nope.  No issue with Paypal in conjunction with SimMarket here.

I’ve been using a credit card for purchases for around 20 years with no issues whatsoever. As long as the site has the padlock showing it’s encrypted it’s perfectly safe. I don’t understand your reluctance.

Unfortunately that doesn't necessarily mean your credit card data is safe anymore.

I can’t read that site. But being based in the U.K. Newegg means nothing to me. Nothing in life is 100% safe. You can sit at home feeling secure then lightning hits your house and it catches fire.

Its all about probability and if you want to buy things on the internet paying by non-cash means is the only option. I trust my credit card company far more than PayPal and transactions are cheaper.

I typically use a Visa Debit card for on-line transactions. I transfer funds from my daily checking account to that card as needed, then allow the balance to remain low (around $40) until I need to make another purchase.

Goates is correct. His point is that no one attempts to steal credit card data in transit - it's far easier to breach the merchant and get everyone's data at once, and there are a lot of companies with less than idea security practices.

With that said I am comfortable providing my credit card number, but I am under no illusions that just because we're using TLS to transmit the data it means we're 100% safe. The best analogy is to take a diamond ring home from the store in an armored truck with an armed escort, but then leave it on a shelf with your doors unlocked and windows open. 😄

That's some odd logic to use as the internet isn't confined to national borders. The same group that perpetrated that Newegg hack also appears to have been behind a very similar one against British Airways. Does this make it somehow more relevant now?

My point is that it it perfectly reasonable for someone to want to protect their credit card information as it is not safe when used online, even if a site uses TLS. I do use my credit card online when I need to, but I also know my bank covers any theft from hacking quite well. However, I do prefer to use PayPal or Apple Pay where supported to minimize the risk.

A message was displayed on your first link saying there was a problem displaying the page. Maybe a subscription is required to read it.

The second one was fine. I’ve never had any problems with my credit card providers over here. My credit card company monitors my spending habits and should I buy something unusual I’ll get a text message asking me to confirm it’s my purchase.

As for my data being stolen I can’t do much about that. PayPal won’t be immune from that either.

Likewise. I really don’t have any issues using my c/c online as my bank does the same over any suspicious activity. Which is usually from my own use when on a vacation somewhere. Annoying but better to be safe then sorry.

"As long as the site has the padlock showing it’s encrypted it’s perfectly safe."  Really surprised to see such a reply this day and age. A comment about a site support SSL/TLS or valid site certificates certainly does not address my post.  Thanks nonetheless.

Well given you won’t be able to use PayPal to buy software from SimMarket what are your alternatives?

The same  I did when Orbx stopped Paypal.   Not buy from them until they do.  There are other products and other providers I can use as I can never afford everything I want.  My priorities just get changed.  Sometimes in a way I see little need to change back.  For some of us it is hard to use a credit card.  I am in a country where overseas transactions on debit visa and mastercard have largely been replaced by Union Pay not recognised by many.  I generally buy in my home country using my main bank account with Paypal however as I am not resident there now Iam not able to get a debit or credit mastercard or visa without a lot of difficulty.  I have stopped worrying,  there is always someone who actually wants my money.

I stopped using PayPal when I realised how much they took in commission. I found a credit card that made no charge for foreign purchases and I use it solely for flight sim.
