Hi,

I still can't make my mind - from what I've seen Envtex seem to have better sky colors, while REX SF seem to have better cloud textures. However, with some tweaks ASCA doesn't look much worse, so it is really hard to decide.

PC specs: i5-12400F, RTX 3070 Ti and 32 GB of RAM.

Simulators I'm using: X-Plane 12, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) and FlightGear.

Hi,

Sorry for bumping the thread, but for some reason I can't edit my last post. I am also planning to get a PPL soon and therefore I would like to have an add-on with more accurate clouds that conform to real-world classifications. Which add-on depict clouds more accurately?

Thanks in advance.

No matter which addon you use, you just can't get the same accuracy or feeling of the clouds in a sim. A simulator is used mostly to learn the systems of an aircraft.

Indeed - all I want is to get rather close to overall feeling of clouds, and I'm curious which one gets close to that feeling the most. While I use simulators to learn aircraft systems and have fun in the process, it would still be helpful to have more accurate clouds.

Either case, I have a feeling that I will get both, but my wallet isn't happy.

I would say without question the clouds are better with rex sky force than asca.  atleast the cumulous ones.

Rex sky force is no doubt the best you can get. Even though they are 2D/3D clouds, the effect it creates is something I have not seen in envtex/ASCA. Plus it comes with sky textures, sun, moon, lightning and and that too a wide variety of variations to choose from. I usually change the presets to the area/country I am flying into giving me a different experience in each flight rather than having the same things repeat everyday.

BiologicalNanobot - no PC based simulator will ever recreate the real sky accurately. If your planning on your PPL you will study basic meteorology and you will soon understand why. The atmosphere is a very complex system that is in continous change minute to minute 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Flying in the real is the same, no day morning to night cloudwise and weather wise is ever the same. The sim provides a representative visualisation. A VFR pilot needs to recognise basic cloud types and understand what cloud produces what effects in terms of precipitation, turbulence and icing!. A commercial pilot needs to understand how weather systems produce weather at the likelihood of good or bad weather! The VFR rules require you to keep away from cloud at reasonable distances vertically and horizontally. That type of judgement cannot be learnt accurately from a simulator. An IFR pilot only wants to know what are the minimums, what are the winds doing, icing probability, precipitation, visibility and turbulence. If your IFR and in cloud your not seeing anything but shadow and your gaze is on the instruments not the outside world. If your IFR you soon learn that flying in and through cloud is never smooth but a bumpy ride all the time!

Use the sim to learn your procedures, get your work flow operating and generaly handling - an just have fun with it. As for your PPL, get a good met textbook , learn the clouds types and become a keen observer! Do it when you don't fly or having a lesson, starting watching the sky and what it does!

If you are on Facebook check out this

Pascal has created some very effective envshade settings.

When you get to Pascal's page on FB, look at the upper right corner where it reads SHOP NOW. Click and it will take you to Pascal's DROPBOX. you can download the package from there. Read his instructions and then you can pick and choose what suits you.

Same. Recently switched back to rex for clouds. It’s a lot better than anything else for that

Hi,

What did you tick in REX to have clouds only? I use ENVTEX for sky colours just now and ASCA for sky also with ENVTEX integration

Vernon Howells

I think that sky textures cannot be changed with EA ON and Volemetric clouds off.
I use Envtex and ASCA.

I think the Skytexures always come from EA

I'm not at my computer right now, but will look later.

@f.skywalkerI go with EA off, so you can change sky colors

Did REX ever address the simconnect issue on flights longer than 6 hours and the sim locking up? @fluffyflops
