What LR Must Do

1) My claim was: community gateway engagement can beat bing data.

Isn't the issue with this approach that we will need cupboards full of new SSD disks to cover the whole world  (if we can afford them)?

...and lots of time to do the actual work beforehand.

xp autogen is already bonkers cool (although currently the buildings are missing pbr)

basically the 3d buildings in XP are made by roughly line drawing the ground floor plan and giving it a height (facades) or drawing a single line to generate a row of detatched houses (strings)

The next version scenery of X-Plane will look vastly better than the current one. Will it look as good (or even better) than MSFS? I don´t think so. But it should close the gap considerably.

If you want to read the letters on your local supermarket sign...you will need to fly MSFS (and be online with a good connection and live in a photogrammetry area).

Cheers, Jan

No chance of that. The supermarket will have melted before you get anywhere near it.😂

But also, how a *2d* aerial imagery, can have data about building heights or anything *3d*... you NEED other 3d sources, like mesh, like photogrammetry or building heights.

And literally all the different data categories you mentioned are available, even for free, for many locations.

Forget it. Thats not true and you know it. If you believe otherwise, you are only fooling yourself.

If 1000 people record 1000 trees every day, they will surpass MSFS in 5479 years!! Claim disproved.

Depens the way you approach it.

I actually expect it to be more plausible, i.e. less buggy, better lods, better art work, better tech for trees and overall more pleseant to the eye and rich in PBR materials, effects, sounds etc.. a particle system and fmod are already in the engine yet to be fully exposed to scenery artists.

On the same note, will be less accurate as LR has less resources mainly speaking data gathering and streaming. But if they get it "mostly accurate" and then let community work it's charm using the gateway, that's IMO rather ideal.

Yeah...this is not how Xplane's scenery work...really disproved none.

Sounds great and I'm looking forward to it! But meanwhile MSFS isn't standing still. Just saying..

Time will tell. Until then, I choose to be sceptical, based on previous experience.

And hopefully will improve even more! Not into fanboism really just like to discuss graphics, art and engine tinkering 😉

MSFS still have a rough phase coming and it is called DX12, until it is rock stable performance wise and i'm waiting for this update as well.

Hopefully DX12 will be optional until it is stable. My hunch is that Asobo have learnt lessons and that it will be tested and stable for the vast majority of PC users. If the beta testers find issues I expect they will delay it.

This really isnt the place to spread MSFS disinformation, please do it somewhere else

The awesome structure exists, internet sleuths have found, because about a year ago, OpenStreetMap user nathanwright120 made an edit that listed the building as having 212 stories rather than just two.

Both use OSM data for their autogen, the only difference is the XP assets havn't [yet] been updated from a time when FSX was still getting regular bug fixes.

Only thing they "must" do there is fix the default lighting (without breaking anything else) - and I dont think anyone cares if that is XP11 or XP12, but it really should be this side of Christmas.

That looks very good! Good assets can really improve the scenery visuals! Just add a modern lighting, atmosphere, and weather, and I think XP wouldn't have to worry about the competition.

@akita See that pic in the post above. Of course this looks much better, and can still be improved, but in the end, no matter how much you tune it, it will look like you're flying above Cities: Skylines.

Also, don't forget that the so-called synthetic scenery allows a lot of things not possible with photogrammetry/photoscenery.

Hopefully XP12 will take full advantage of that!
