Rex Weather Force Tech Update

Recommended Posts

I have not used this since WU4, ever since then my VR setup used to get bogged down while running this.

Now it is usable again 😀

i am no expert on these weather packages but I must admit using this REX on a flight from Innsbruck to Salzburg turned out to be the most challenging and enjoyable flight I have ever had.

In the PA44 with spring showers set, I was overflying the mountains about 8000 ft and saw the weather front build up in front. I thought ahh its only a cloud, but things changed!

I could not go down due to the mountains and could not climb above the cloud base in that old bus!. So straight through it was, I have never watched my instruments as much in my sim life! Tossed and turned all over the place, eventually a small break in the cloud and it looked stunning with the light shafts and rain, and I took that moment to get down.

It's time to reprise this flight, but now with the Turbo Arrow.

Though live weather still bogs my system, probably the fault of the crappy internet I have got, the presets are good enough for me.

I recommend it.

I switch over to this when the lightning bug hits in MSFS own live weather.

Tried a flight earlier today using the updated version and found it to be very smooth and well executed. Starting with a low IFR foggy departure from KIPT to a VFR arrival at KFRG, the update seems to make better and more timely selections of on-route METARS from which to generate the in-sim weather. In addition it seemed to add a modest "random" component to the cloudscape that, while consistent with the METAR at KFRG, also threw in a random cloud or two around 2,000 ft that made the putatively visual approach into rwy 1 much more interesting. This can happen in real life as well, which is why pilots need to pay careful attention to minimum cloud clearances at all times.

Very satisfying.

Can't speak about Unreal Weather, but Rex WF was worth it for me. Not sure what the reviews were complaining about. It does what it says it will, namely provide METAR-based weather depiction, along with a smooth link to real world flight level winds.

Why not try Unreal Weather for free and then have a look at what else WF will do for you (or not) and then decide?

Some seem to like it and give good reviews, but I personally find it underwhelming.  I did purchase it after reading positive reviews, did one flight and was so unimpressed I have not used it again.

I took off from an airfield with clear skies, and flew towards a weather front over my destination.  With live weather I could see the front in the distance while completing my ground checks. Flying towards my destination, high cloud gradually changed to medium level cloud.  Getting closer to my destination I could see towering cumulous Nimbus clouds over my destination airfield.  The wind also gradually increased. Eventually I could see rain falling out the window, as well as on the weather radar.  I tried the same Flight with Rex but all I saw was blue sky all the way to my destination.  A few miles from landing, the blue sky changed to a cloudy sky with rain - complete immersion fail for me.

I'm going to try it again. I bought it shortly after release and, like others have said, wasn't feeling it was worth the effort and stopped using it. I'll be interested to see it after the many (and I mean many. my god, is this the best they can do with updating the software? I mean, at least 6 updates to get to the latest version?) updates.

I wish Asobo would release the weather SDK (I think they have it planned?) so that REX could start making the weather more like as it is in the REAL WORLD unlike what Asobo "thinks" real or live weather is. There should be pockets of turbulence here and there even in smooth conditions, it is VERY rare to have perfectly smooth air with absolutely no bumps - I can fly 600 miles at 5,000 feet and not even a bump except over mountainous terrain! Whaaa? I think that Asobo is AFRAID to implement real conditions because too many people would complain - so have a setting "Real Weather!"

I've noticed that REX does utilize various cloud types (a LOT more than the "live" weather shows), what I mean is there is much more "variety" of clouds like towering cumulus, actual overcast and 7/8 broken, etc. I haven't seen these in "live weather" since before SU3 or SU2...I think that all types of clouds except cumulus storms (the large whipped cream clouds) and the puffy/see through ugly clouds remain. But the other cloud types are still "in the sim", just not being used in live weather...

I have both in use and neither is perfect. On one day at one time and location, one of the two is better.  On another day the other is better. REX WF with this update was clearly better today when I originated from KDTW, but it is but one day and one location so far.  Not an adequate sample size.  I'd highly recommend readers ignore chest-thumping one is better claims. And I certainly hope no one is judging either based on MSFS ATIS/AWOS broadcasts.  That may be the single most significant flaw of MSFS at this day and time!

Haven't used Rex Weather Force in months.

How does it currently compare to the default Live Weather in MSFS 2020?

Has anyone else had the same problem?

And it will be like that till Asobo allows access to the weather API (to which they said they won’t) — in the meantime you get this hack-ey workaround that 3rd Party Developers have to implement to even do anything with the weather. Classic Asobo.

There's an API planned, not an SDK. Think weather radar, wind shear predicitions etc., not 3rd party weather providers.
