Rex Weather Force Tech Update

There's an API planned, not an SDK. Think weather radar, wind shear predicitions etc., not 3rd party weather providers.

Ah yes API that was what I recall seeing, thank you for the correction. So this means only obtaining data, not so much changing it?

In some ways it can be a 'pick your poison' kind of thing.  I think the default MSFS live weather is great EXCEPT that infernal lightning appearing with no storms nearby.  That for me is a deal-breaker.  What I typically do is if the live MSFS weather produces that lightning, I just switch it back to 'clear skies' and then activate REX.  Accurate weather, no lightning.

The flip side is the somewhat jarring transitions outside your window when flying from one metar to the next.  That can be a bit immersion breaking, but no less than constant unrealistic lightning in good weather, and certainly less irritating.  I can live with that as a stop-gap until they get the lightning issue fixed.

This new version seems to transition a lot better...at least based on one flight I did last night.

BUT the downside is that when it's updating it hurts the frame rate.  I'm going to experiment with options and see if I can reduce that behavior.

Jarring is the word with Rex!  I read this thread and decided to fly with it. Did a 50 mile flight in the UK. Took off in scattered clouds. About 15 miles from the destination I looked at my tablet running Foreflight to look at destination charts.

I looked back out the window at completely blue sky!  I don't see any value in metar based weather when you can't see distant weather that MSFS live weather gives you.  Rex weather is like going back in time.

With regard to weather transitions, there are several settings available that adjust the time over which these occur. I wish that Rex would provide a few videos to help us understand exactly how these work and what impact they have on frame rate, etc. Apparently the Enable Persistent Weather Load option helps to smooth these transitions.

Of course, this has always been an issue with weather in flight sims. Presumably smooth transitions increase cpu/gpu processor loads, but that's true for any such software. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Cheers.

I've done a few flights with REX - as I purchased it give it a few tries!

I checked the weather at KSBA which gave 1,300ft overcast.  Loaded MSFS with live weather, but once in the aircraft it was mostly blue sky.  Started Rex WF and I did indeed get 1300ft overcast.  KSBA tends to get cloud off the sea so I decided to take off, head north to clear the coastal cloud and then turn back.  Entered the cloud at 1400ft, losing sight of the ground.  Climbed over the mountains and cleared the cloud cover into blue sky.  Heading north I couldn't see any mountains, obviously because this 1300ft cloud layer was global.  The cloud disappeared over 10 seconds so I turned back towards the coast and there was my departure airport and coast in blue sky with visibility for miles.  I descended to pattern altitude - the mountains north of the field remained visible in blue sky.  I flew over the airport and turned left downwind.  As I turned base the 1300ft overcast layer gradually returned.

This example just shows how limiting this weather program is. If I was going to remain in the pattern, the weather would have been ok, but as soon as you leave the area it is very unrealistic.

I have been using Live weather in msfs since the latest update.

What struck me with Rex was more turbulence in all axis. Default always seemed to be tame, I suppose it’s buried in the settings somewhere.

With Rex on spring showers setting the C172 was having a tough time, so one or two clicks and job done.

I guess that if one considers this a realistic flight scenario, then yes, this software might yield an unrealistic result.

If one flies from KSBA to anywhere else, based on my experience, Rex provides something more realistic. BTW, this might be one of those instances in which it might be more satisfactory, if one used a longer interval between updates. WF seems to be picking up a nearby airport METAR and displaying the corresponding weather. It then reverts back to KSBA, etc., etc. I flew in coastal CA for a year and found the weather there to be "interesting." That coastal marine layer can provide serous challenges.

I use MSFS live weather, REX WF, and Unreal Weather.  My conclusion?  It is the sim that is limiting.  And to make matters worse the dialog from Asobo is that they have no plans to provide what is needed to open it up effectively.

MSFS live weather is still hit or miss when compared to RL conditions. REX WF almost always matches RL conditions but its weather transitions can be clunky. This is all on Asobo's shoulders for not including weather functions in their SDK.

Yes agree - and I think that Asobo said in the most recent Q&A that they are considering allowing the ability to "write" weather data to the sim - think REX or ActiveSky - that would be great! They just do not want to allow reading weather data as that would be licensing issue.. Let's keep hoping! Unless Asobo comes up with some huge weather changes in the sim - it's just not predictable right now what to expect at destination, never really know what to expect. But eve if the destination weather is "bad" like a thunderstorm, theres nothing to really worry about you can just fly right through a storm with no worries of turbulence or wind gusts.

I received a letter about the next Weather Force 1.7 update, as I bought it for P3D. But I'm waiting for smooth weather transitions to be implemented. Can anyone check this update?

This is all that is said on the website...

Technical Update 1.7   FIX LIST      FIXED – Compatibility with the latest version of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator 1.20.6.0        And, whatever this means.... IMPROVED – General overall weather injection performance
