Photoreal...Ughhhh!

Featured Replies

Yesterday I was again reminded how much I dislike photoreal scenery.

I downloaded a photoreal scenery for Edwards Air Force Base.  Oh sure, from 10,000 feet it looks like the tarmac is filled with fighters and bombers.  But after you land and start taxiing to the hangar they look like someone spilled paint on the tarmac...which is what they have done.   Two dimensional aircraft because the third dimension is only a molecule thick.

I quickly deleted it and got a scenery that had some static birds on the tarmac.

I guess I don't mind photoreal in cities and towns because I am looking them from altitude.  But if I were to drive through the photoreal neighborhoods they would look barren on the ground.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I'm with you Noel. My experience with photoreal scenery over the years has taught me to leave it to someone else.

Photo real is just a snap shot in time so you can drop the real and call it photo scenery.  No seasons either. Usually just a summer day in all seasons.

I had the same Edwards scenery.  All of the buildings were pancakes!

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Perhaps the best results are a combination of photo scenery and autogen.
The immense popularity of the Microsoft Flight Simulator might be evidence of that.

Photo scenery by itself is not at all pleasing from ground level or low altitude.  It is best when combined with autogen and 3-D structures, but still does not respond to changing seasons.  I tend to avoid photo scenery.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Did they ever fix the flat ships at the Manama pier, which is pretty much exactly what Noel is talking about? For that matter, I tried ORBX photoreal Northern California in P3D and the added objects just made it look extra weird, so I went back to their other product. (They were on sale at the time, but there's probably more to the story I've forgotten.) Flight simulation seems to be divided into people who love photoreal and people who hate it. To each his own. Photoreal looks great from 35,000 feet and should transition as you get lower. Another brilliant FSX product I miss, If it weren't for bad weather, I'd never fly over the Midwest U.S. because of the awful quilt block effect P3D inherited from FSX. Chalk up one for MSFS. Too bad nothing in my classic fleet flies over anything at any altitude in it.

Tim, Orbx Northern California TE is a disgrace.  They cut one of California scenic gems in half...Lake Tahoe.  I was going to half-a(word not allowed) accept it until I cleared the mountains west of lake that and saw afterbirth of a Mongolian gang bang.  That beautiful lake cut in half with two different shades of water.  What a disgrace.
