Shaft lubrication

Recommended Posts

Ahem. 😐

We have had reports from a couple of customers that have tried to lubricate the main shaft and front bushing with teflon spray as recommended by us. It turns out that they were using Blaster Dry Lube. This has either had no effect or actually added some friction. When the spray was wet it improved things but once dry it left a white powdery residue and more friction. I did some googling and it seems that there are a lot of reports of Blaster leaving behind a white residue, including on their own site.

When releasing the yoke from full forward it will bounce backwards and forwards a few times even when it is 'dragging' For clarity here is one I pulled off the bench and filmed to show what it should be like.

https://fulcrumsim.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/yoke-movement.mp4

I made an assumption that all PTFE sprays were the same because the ones we have locally do not leave behind any residue but evaporate leaving a thin layer of teflon on the item. In theory, this is what all teflon sprays should do but it seems that some leave behind a residue.

I am not going to solely recommend a brand because there are many brands in different parts of the world, but during assembly and testing we have now taken to using WD-40 Specialist Anti Friction Dry PTFE Lubricant on the mainshaft and bushing. Then cycling the shaft a few times and allowing it to dry.

If you want to try some lubrication then teflon spray is our recommended method. Just make sure to use one that does not leave any powdery residue and dries totally clear. If you try one and after it dries, there is a white residue, this can be wiped off.

Based on customer suggestions and experiences in the field I wanted to point out that if you are looking at WD40 products it must be the dry lube (note the branding change).

@tutmeister, morning Chris. My yoke could do with this treatment. Is the WD40 product you recommmend freely available in the UK from hardware shops? I'm guessing it's different to the standard WD40 we use for freeing tight bolts etc.

The main shaft is clear enough but I'm not sure what you mean by the front bushing. Do I need to open the case to get to that?

Hi Ray

You can do this by squirting the WD40 Teflon spray  around the opening at the front. You don't need to open the case for this. You can get the dry ptfe from Halfords, Amazon and most other places that sell that sort of thing. It is not the original WD40, is is marked as specialist Dry PTFE or somthing similar and the can is a different colour.

Thanks Chris. I have a Halfords on my trading estate so will visit them tomorrow. It was after watching your video I realised mine had far less movement.

As Ray posted in the other thread on the subject:

https://wd40.co.uk/product/anti-friction-dry-ptfe-lubricant-spray/

Be aware that the packaging has changed at some point. You'll see that on the WD40 page you linked to - there are 2 different designs for the same product. I think the predominately blue scheme (as per the original WD40) is the older version. Same product, different colour schemes on the cans.

I’ve just returned from Halfords and bought this..

https://wd40.co.uk/product/high-performance-ptfe-lubricant/

However, on Halford’s website they also have this...

https://wd40.co.uk/product/anti-friction-dry-ptfe-lubricant-spray/

@tutmeister, I suspect I’ve bought the wrong one. Can you confirm please?

Hi Ray

I'm trying to find out the difference on various review websites as WD40 are not very clear. From what I can see, the high performance one is a heavier duty lubricant you might use on tools or bike chains as opposed to a lighter friction reducing formula for sliding parts. It won't damage anything and would probably work ok but I haven't used that one personally.

Hi Chris,

After an hour of talking to Halfords and searching online I can confirm that WD-40 Dry PTFE lubricant is not available at any Halfords store in the UK.

However, it can be bought from Euro Car Parts. I've ordered one and will collect tomorrow. Price 7.49 GBP.

I really don't want to use anything you haven't personally recommended. So all should be well tomorrow and I'll return the one I bought from Halfords on Friday.

This is the product I believe is the one you've recommended...

Note the different photos of the Dry PTFE on Euro Car Parks and the WD-40 website.

Yes I believe that WD40 recently updated their branding but not everything on their website!

That’s reassuring and suggests the image on the Euro Car Parts site is the correct one.

And yet according to their website, I could order it for collection from my nearest store.🤔 Just another reason for not being a fan of Halfords.

Also available in the UK from Wickes.

Wickes and ECP show a different image to Halfords. Confusing!

For US Fulcrum users, I found the "New Look" can below at a Walmart store in Colorado, USA. It dries clear and works very well -- made quite a difference. Cost was $5.74. Automotive parts stores may also carry this, but you need to be careful since there are many types of WD-40. Whatever you get, test it and make sure it dries clear and is not oily before using it on the yoke.

Edit: Chris, it might be helpful to add a few pictures to your original post above.
