November 11, 20214 yr Author I've always wondered what 'Waltzing Matilda' meant...if anything but dancing with a girl named Matilda. Is it Australian slang for anything? Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
November 11, 20214 yr Google is your friend..... Waltzing Matilda is Australia's unofficial anthem, a song about a man living in the bushland of Australia. ... In the song, the man lives in the bush and sleeps under the stars in his swag (which is where the name comes from; waltzing means to to travel on foot and the 'matilda' is his swag or tent). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltzing_Matilda https://sailing-whitsundays.com/article/history-of-waltzing-matilda Doug Edited November 11, 20214 yr by W2DR kant spel Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. November 11, 20214 yr Author Thanks Doug. That clears it up for me. I'd love to visit Australia again. Spent three weeks in Alice Springs when I was in the Air Force but between work and visiting the local pubs I didn't have much time for travelling. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. November 11, 20214 yr Moderator Surprised no one mentioned “Picnic at Hanging Rock” directed by Peter Weir. Very atmospheric and based on a true story I believe. Gets good reviews. Honourable mention to the great Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee. Based partly in Australia but also New York. Some great laughs in that plus a memorable scene involving a crocodile attacking the female lead. More recently The Dry is also very good. 👍 Ray (Cheshire, England). Even funnier...in American English a "shrimp" can either be the seafood delicacy or a real small person! "Hey, shrimp, get outta my way!" We spent two weeks in Sydney back in 2018. Like you, having once lived in San Francisco I thought is was the most beautiful bay in the world. Until I went to Sydney. And saw the harbor. Wow! I've never seen anything like it. Interestingly. I never had any problem at all with the Aussie accent/slang on that trip. Maybe it's just a "movie" thing. I met a bloke there who's become one of my best internet mates. Now if I could just interest him in flying..... November 11, 20214 yr Author I like to boil up a package of Zataran's long grain and wild rice. While that is boiling up wipe the bottom of a skillet with olive oil and then toss in 2 tablespoons of butter and put on low. Add a diced white onion, a chopped up green pepper, a handful of unsalted peanuts, sprinkle thyme and sage flakes over the top and some Lowry's seasoned salt and seasoned pepper. Let simmer on low. While that is happening wash a half pound or so of raw shrimp. I buy the frozen packages shelled and deveined. Dry the shrimp in paper towels and cut them in half. When the rice is done add it to the skillet and turn the heat up. Stir up the rice and other ingredients and keep stirring until the rice turns slightly brown. Then add the shrimp and keep stirring until the shrimp just start turning orange. Turn off the flame and serve. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. November 11, 20214 yr Author We seem to have run out of Australian films. How about New Zealand films? saw a good one a year or so ago but I forgot the name of it. It was about cutting timber on the North Island I think. Noel Edited November 11, 20214 yr by birdguy The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
