Australian Movies

Featured Replies

Last night Turner Classic Movies had two gems from Australia.  Walkabout and The Last Wave.

Walkabout is about a teenage girl and her little brother getting stuck in the outback.  They  eventually met an aboriginal boy on his walkabout and they team up.  The ending is somewhat puzzling.  You don't know if they return to civilization or go back to the outback and find the aboriginal boy who helped them.  Some nudity but not erotic.  Just matter of fact.  This would have never played in the US in the 70s with a white girl and a black man swimming naked together in a pond.  But it is tasteful.

The Last Wave is about a white lawyer defending 5 aboriginal men for murder.  Some of it pretty surreal.  A lot of 'dreamtime' stuff I found very interesting.

I like Australian movies and watch them whenever I have the opportunity.  Some I'd like to see again are The Man from Snowy River and The Shiralee, The Sundowners and others I can't think of the titles now.  One about a woman steamboat captain on the Murray River I think.

And Oh Yes, On The Beach.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I remember the Murray River movie now.  It was a TV series.  And for some reason, I think it was an accident her husband had, she had to skipper the paddle wheeler.

She had to go before a board and face an oral examination to get her papers.  She was asked what she would do if he ship hit a rock and had a hole in the bottom.  She aid she'd find the passenger with the biggest behind and make them sit in it until they made landing.

Do any of you recall that series?

I've always wanted to visit the Murray River because I understand the upper reaches have some pretty large trout.

I see no record of a 'deleted' post. We do not actually delete posts, we simply make them non-visible to anyone but staff members.

I'm wrong Bill.  My post is still in the thread I thought this was.  There must have been two of these accidentally.

or I guess Noel didn't like my answer so he started another thread with the exact same starter post. hmmmm...

One of my favourites is the year my voice broke, little known outside Australia but a really good coming of age film set in the outback.

An old friend of mine was the stuntman on that film, he did the horse riding stunts.

He left that profession and became an airline pilot, we did our 747 first officer to captain simulator assessment together.

787 captain.

Previously 24 years on 747-400.Technical advisor on PMDG 747 legacy versions QOTS 1 , FS9 and Aerowinx PS1.

Two good Aussie movies guaranteed to give you second thoughts about touring the Outback are Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek 2.

I think the ending was just the girl, now a grown, married woman, remembering that happy moment amongst all the horror and hardship. They wouldn't have gone back because I think the aboriginal boy killed himself.

Eureka Stockade was another, older Australian movie starring Chips Rafferty.
