Ground Steering With Yoke?

Featured Replies

Hello: I am using the Alpha Yoke with MS2020…I do not have rudder pedals (Yet!), so I have the “Auto Rudder” set to on…But, this seems to have no effect when trying to steer on the ground…Is there a way I can set my yoke to use the rudder control on the ground to steer? I hope this question is clear and thanks for your help to a new user of MS2020…

I have moved your topic to the appropriate forum since you were not offering a tip or trick!

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

There are two ways I figured out in order to have rudders without having physical ones: 1> if you have an available axis switch (I have Automatic Mixture ON and use the Mixture slider my CH Flight Yoke) to assign to it.  It ain't perfect, but really, you don't spend that much time on the ground.  The other way is to assign "Rudder Left" and "Rudder Right" to two different buttons on your Yoke.  The problem there is it's an All or Nothing deal, so you will end up tapping the button very lightly, and often.

I'm sure others have ideas about this too.

There was a way to have rudder assist on takeoff. It resulted in being able to taxi the aircraft using the joystick or yoke to turn.  It was not auto rudder. It looks like that option was removed in one of the SUs, because I don't see it anymore.

If you use rudder assist on take off, (Assistance Menu) you should be able to steer with your yoke.

I don't have that option!

Well I have auto rudder enabled even though I also have rudder pedals mainly to assist with crosswind landings that in my view can be very tricky in sims without the additional cues you get in real life.  I also find that with auto rudder enabled you can steer with the yoke on the ground.  While not realistic for many aircraft it does give you some additional steering control over just using pedals.  I guess in the air it is the same as having YD on all the time.  In the past takeoff and landing assist have been suggested where ground steering is a problem but I don't get any benefit from those settings.  It would be neat to have a short cut setting for enabling auto rudder so that you could enable it just for crosswind landings without having to go into the menus.

Auto rudder gives you coordinated flight. A crosswind landing is not coordinated flight.

True,  but to quote from the Assistance Options Menu for Auto-Rudder "Enabling this option will also cancel out effects of any crosswind during takeoff or landing to make it easier to stay aligned with the runway."  This is why I use it.  Not realistic but neither is sitting in front of a 2 display pretending you are in an aeroplane.

Two different topics. True a sim is not exactly the same as a real aircraft, but certainly when a sim is perfectly capable of practicing crosswind approaches and landings, and takeoffs, to turn that option completely off, makes zero sense to me.

The fun in flying an aircraft is to practice things like handling crosswinds, which occur on almost every approach and landing. Very seldom is the wind directly down the runway, but usually at some angle to the runway. Whether to use a slip, or crab approach, is a major part of flying an aircraft. Turning that off, isn't flying in my opinion.

I don't use it myself, but I definitely have that option available, are you using PC or XBOX?

It used to be titled Takeoff rudder assist, or something like that. In one of the last updates, it has been changed to autorudder.

You need to use the rudder to steer on the ground and if you can't steer tightly enough, one then you need to use differential braking.  Auto rudder won't do it for you.

Ironically when I was first learning to fly and doing circuits I was substantially better at crosswinds then I was at straight in approaches 😄
