Count me in!  If it breaks off from the asteroid, would it fall to earth, float back to space, or stay put in some perfectly orchestrated equilibrium?  I assume crash to earth.

A question.

Wouldn't a large object suspended from a satellite into the atmosphere slow it down enough to lose orbital speed?

Noel

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

That isn't even the half of it.

There are so many issues, just off the top of ones head, to make the whole thing a nightmare.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Don't bother if the world is in the same shape then as it is now.

Our beloved cat gods and goddesses will have taken over by then.

A few years back I stayed in a hotel designed by those guys. Lousy food, uncomfortable beds, ugly waitresses, and the bar closed at midnight. Good luck Noel. Let us know how you make out. Especially with the waitresses.

Yeah, very true. All manner of issues make it currently infeasible. The biggest issue is that we have no cable material capable of handling the strain. Same applies to the "space elevator". Carbon nanotubes have been suggested but we don't have the  capability currently to create such a lengthy cable. The windows would be an issue too, in terms of withstanding the pressure differential.

Weirdly, the easiest part of the project would be capturing and towing the asteroid to Earth orbit. In fact this was something NASA were seriously planning to do with the "Asteroid Redirect" mission but I think its been scraped.

I'm very sorry, but he wont be able to let you know how he makes out. The project wont be completed until 3022. My plan is to put Noel into cryogenic storage and then thaw him out in 3022.

I hope when he wakes up our planet is still a place where humans can survive.  I'd hate to think that a thousand years from now there wouldn't be anyone around to enjoy Birdman's wonderful stories.

There's no need for concern.

I actually invented a time machine, while tinkering around in my shed, and transported myself to the future in order to make birdman's reservation. Cost me a fortune in parts to make the time machine, and I can tell you, the luxury suite cost a mint. But yes, I digress, while in the future I discovered its actually a lovely place. Mankind has progressed to the point where hostility is a thing of the past, everyone is polite, the planet is restored to its former glory, no pollution, no excessive CO2. And no money! Everything is free. Call centres don't exist and nobody pretends to be from Microsoft to steal your savings.

Yes, its true that the majority of the human race are cyborgs but the benefit is people of the future can do miraculous things like see through ladies clothing with their bionic eyes that utilise terahertz wave technology.  Not to mention open a jar of pickles with ease despite the vacuum sealed lid, thanks to mega powerful cyborg muscles.

I'd like to reveal more but due to the butterfly effect I might change the future and the wondrousness of it might not then be manifest. I'm sure you understand.

You da man Martin. Thank you so much for alleviating my concerns. Now I know all my worries were for naught. I think I'll celebrate by having a double shot of my 55 year-old Yamazaki single malt.

Just the other evening an old movie based on an HG Wells story where Rod Taylor makes a time machine and travels to the future.  Good movie.

Aren't you concerned that when I am revived my antiquated bodily functions like inhaling and exhaling might have a butterfly effect that would negatively change the climate of your ideal world of the future?  Or that my contrariness might upset the Wa of the cyborgs?

Oh yes, another one of my favourite movies. Rod Taylor in "The Time Machine". The Morlock humanoid species were a bit scary. I love the way he built a time machine with Victorian technology. 😀

HG Wells was a great writer.

Don't worry, if you decide to stay in the future they will just reprogram your neural pathways and enhance your respiratory system so that it emits the perfect balance of gasses. Even your fart gas will be recalibrated.

Crash it would, just like in the series Foundation.
