February 15, 20224 yr The pilot pulled full aft stick trying to stop the descent, and stalled it onto the runway. You can tell by watching the elevators as the engine quits all the way to impact. He should have pitched forward to maintain speed then rounded out just above the runway. Too bad. Looked like a beautiful airplane. Kerry W. Yup, probably concerned about rolling into the trees by landing ahead on what was left of the runway remaining, but that would have probably been a lot less damage and the pilot might even have been able to get the stick back and turn it. He was climbing at VX when the engine failed and, from that low altitude, even if he had lowered the nose he would not have gained enough airspeed to flare and slow the descent. He would have probably hit the ground nose down instead. The combination of low altitude and climbing just above stall speed at the time of the engine failure left him between a rock and a hard place. February 15, 20224 yr Easy to 'armchair quarterback' this pilot's decisions, however, I'm reminded of this video from FlightChops - an invaluable skill to develop. The OP's linked video led me to another interesting video by Fly8MA, if somewhat slightly different set of circumstances. These two videos have really opened my eyes to be alert for a engine failure at any given moment and have a plan for where to go should it happen.
