Is photogrammetry slow to render?

Featured Replies

I've started getting more into MSFS2020. One of the things I noticed  and is driving me crazy is photogrammetry cities and scenery seems render slowly. You have to be right on top of them for it too fully render. I also see building rendering/morphing into shape as I fly directly over them. I'm on the USA East Server, ping 29. I get 998 mps download on speed test. This video and this video are close to what I see, not as bad as this users but still annoying. My performance is smooth and my system handles the sim fine, it's just the photogrammetry. Is there a fix or is this a known issue?

Hmmm. That is pretty strange with those connectivity numbers. Im kind of at a loss also. I get close to 300Mbps and I don't have this problem at all. What is your LOD slider percentage?

I’m set at 200 and 200. Again mine is not as bad as the videos I linked but it’s noticeable. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos of MSFS2020 and sometimes I’ll notice it with other users. I’m wondering if this is normal and I’m just noticing it since I’m getting into 2020 more these days. CPU and GPU values are fine and nothing is being over tasked.

That has nothing to do with the internet connection, but with the LOD. They only render fully when very close (vertically and horizontally), because otherwise they would kill performance even more. You can influence this with the terrain LOD, but only partly. There is no way to prevent the "melted" looks, especially when you are flying high.

It’s worse than slow in places. When departing eastbound from Heathrow I have to be very careful not to look outside the window towards the city. Disappointment every time, nuclear wasteland etc. Problem is though, I cannot not look. Always curious - “is it better this time”. “Did they fix it?” It just doesn’t seem to want to render at all 😕

There is nothing to "fix", it is an intentional mechanism to reduce perfomance impact. PG is the single most taxing thing on MSFS. And even the most modern CPUs still can't handle a non-nuclear-wasteland-PG, apparently.

I fly with PG OFF and enjoy crisp ground textures, no melted buildings or odd shaped trees..  The performance is silky smooth (locked at 30FPS) and everything is so fluid, no stutters.. (Only thing now that caused me fps loss was RT + PSXT in mega airports.. which is expected.. so have turned to static AI for now)..

It is like the best blend of Ortho4XP & Orbx LC.. the autogen is super plausible and looks convincing... when I'm flying jets, I'm too high and fast to notice landmarks anyway, so it doesn't matter if the building down there has a Citibank logo or just a generic high rise logo.. all i'm interested is, does it look like an urban district vs rural vs industrial etc..

now, when i'm flying low and slow over cities that have unmistakable landmarks (NYC, SYD, HKG etc), I can always get landmark packs and still fly with PG off to enjoy the best of both worlds..

Fair enough. Just seems the photogrammetry is better in some places. Got my LOD set to 300 if that makes any difference.

That's exactly what I do. I think autogen looks good most of the time thanks to the superb lighting, especially with buildings = ultra. But I also love watching the PG on final approach or after takeoff, when it is rendered properly. That is still superior to autogen, but as you said, most of the time it's not and it uses a huge amount of resources. Landing at Inibuilds EGLL with PG on and AIG at 100%? Gives me literally 12 FPS. PG off -> almost double. And Heathrow is not even in the middle of London...

Yeah I'm afraid there is not much you can do. LOD will help, but it does not make that much of a difference compared to the massive performance drain. Some PG is also inherently bad quality, no matter how close you are (Vienna for example is awful). Hopefully in the future Asobo can optimise the performance a bit.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I’m happy it’s not just me. I was thinking I had a hardware or internet issue. I guess watching YouTube and Stream videos don’t show how much this happens when actually using the sim. I hope they address this in the future.

I keep PG off for a couple of reasons, performance and lighting.  PG doesn't reflect the light realistically, where autogen does.  Important to me is seeing towns and villages in the distance when flying VFR.  Autogen buildings reflect light from a large distance.  PG can look super bad when on the ground so overall I just leave it off.

How do you turn PG off? In the data settings, correct?

go to your settings, select the 'Data' menu on the left, and disable photogrammetry from there.

Just tried it and FPS went through the roof AND no more stutters!! Locked at 40fps and SMOOTH as butter....Wow. I will need to do more testing but I might say bye bye to PG 🙂
