First Airliner Advice

Thanks for the advice everyone! Its been wonderful to read all these responses.

@Little Jenny I already have the FBW installed and am about to take it for another outing. I'm having a hard time deciding between the A320 and 737 honestly. The 737 seems complex to me right now. Watching a video isn't the same as actually playing with the aircraft however so It just might be how I'm viewing it right now.

By chance how many Liveries does the 737 come with?

It only comes with the default PMDG liveries, however you can download a collection (about 20 I think) from their Ops Center.

And just an FYI...along with the 15 or so I painted...there is close to 600...yes I said six hundred ...liveries for the PMDG 737 on flightsim.to! 😵

Question @Steve Dra So the 737 is fully functional in every way for pilots? Just curious is all. I've seen the Fenix is an older model of the A320 and of course they still arnt saying when paypal will be enabled. Leaning more toward the 737 right now but still undecided.

I'm honestly surprised they did not go with the most current airliner so I'm assuming these are the bulk of any fleets planes?

Well..."fully functional in every way" is a tall order for all but multi-million dollar full Level-D simulators, but its functional enough to immerse you convincingly if you let it. 🙂

As for Fenix picking the older A320...yes there are vastly more in service than the most recent model "NEO" (for the uninitiated into the many aviation acronyms...stands for "New Engine Option")

And make no mistake...either airliner you choose is NOT going to be "easy" to step into and expect the same proficiency you can get in a Cessna 150 after a few hours.  These birds in the real world never fly without 2 crewmembers and for good reason.  We just have some helpers in flightsim that lets us pilot them sufficiently enough to get them from point A to B without turning them into lawn darts! 🤣

You are in for some good reading, learning, failing, and finally getting how to fly them...I promise it won't be before either PMDG gives you the -700s little sister or Fenix gives you IAEs or Sharklets. 😉

of course,

the PMDG 737-800 is what I would reckon many sim pilots would desire,

will be available sometime…

The 737 was overwhelming for me at first but for the most part, I've got the hang of it now.  Airliners just take time.

Okay, I've been researching more. @Little Jenny and @Steve Dra this is a question for you.

So, from what I can find the 737 does not have an EFB but its coming?

I also assume you can perform holding patterns using autopilot as well? Haven't played enough with the airliners to know if this is possible.

I plan to get both airliners at some point. I've always be fascinated by them and can't believe I have waited so long to give them a try. I'm having a lot of fun with them.

Thanks for any info in advance!

Yes and yes.

Here is tutorial on holds.  Its for the older P3D version, but the function is the same in MSFS.

Thanks for that Steve! It's much appreciated. Now to figure out how to do some repaints. Have no clue how to go about that.

If I were you I would play with the FBW and if you like the natural step up to the Fenix it is an incredible aircraft at an incredible price.

@Aglos77 I keep reading people having so many issues with the Fenix. I'm in the Fenix discord and I see so many issues. I have a low end GFX card just a Nvida 1080 and I worry about the lag and stutters I keep reading about and seeing. Plus he hasn't enabled Paypal purchasing yet.

That's the structure of Discord, thousands of people posting at the same time multiple times because they get no answer. It's chaos pure. Don't let that fool you into thinking the Fenix has many issues. It's almost bug-free and runs as good as the 737 if you use the Fenix app appropriately. I have a 1080 ti FYI.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Its a complete sub-hobby in of itself.  I've been doing it 20 years and still learn things on every new paint.   If you go down that rabbit hole, you'll need a 36 hour day to manage learning to paint and fly an airliner. 😉

Don't visit the PMDG forums then, I have Fenix, pmdg and Leonardo, all three still have some time to mature but despite their problems, the Fenix is the most complete right now

The pmdg forums are also full of people with problems, it's normal with these releases.
