From FullHD To 4K

Hi guys, quick question: I'm contemplating switching from a FullHD TV to one with 4K resolution. At the moment, my 1080 Ti is not overwhelmed by my settings (FXAA, 2 x MSAA), with a normal usage of 30 to 50 %. In your experience, how much will the usage rise? Will I be able to counter by reducing the AA settings? Thanks

Best regards, Dimitrios

I've been flying 4K for the past 5 years, currently on a 2080ti.

However I began with a 980ti(!) and quickly swapped it for an Aorus 1080ti. I could now fly all complex airliners (FSLA320, MD80, PMDG boeings) with locked 30fps.

Used 4xMSAA as anti-aliasing. If you are interested I can post my settings with the 1080ti.

As always in P3d v5, watch out for vram starvation when using 4K.

Had the same setup with a 1080ti and a 4k monitor just until a few months ago. Works well up to 2x SSAA even under demanding conditions.

I just recommend limiting your 4k monitor to 30Hz and within P3D unlimited FPS.

I’ve been running 4K with a 1080Ti for around 4 years. VSync enabled, unlimited frame rates and a monitor with a native resolution of 30Hz.

Only hit VRAM problems at Miami with Ultra Textures. Easily resolved. The extra detail that 4K brings is wonderful especially on aircraft with old style gauges.

AA settings are minimal. 4xMSAA only.

You're welcome. This was my settings with a 6700k/1080ti combo and P3D v4. 🙂

Thanks! I have 5 profiles, which I select depending on speed and complexity of aircraft and scenery in use. Some of them have higher settings than yours, some lower. I think - hope - it'll be okay 😁

Difference between 4 MSAA and 2 SSAA?

How does one know what to choose?

Use your judgement. 😉

Obviously 4K is not the only criteria for choosing AA settings. I suspect different pixel densities are playing a major role besides just different tastes.

E.g. I have a 40“ monitor with 4k resolution. For me 4x MSAA is not acceptable due to bad shimmering of all fine lines as fences or taxi/apron markings. On a 27“ monitor pixel density is much higher than mine and I suspect shimmering is way less prominent.

Your taste may vary 😉

With my 32” 4K monitor, I find that 4xSSAA provides the most pleasing presentation. I have an RTX 3080 GPU with 12 Gb of VRAM, and seldom exhaust the video memory.

Because at night with dynamic lighting on MSAA is going to tank your frames.

You mean SSAA is going to tank your frames, right?
