Hello all!

When my i9-9900k is the bottleneck when having a 3080, what are the settings that I could reduce that will impact the CPU the most?

Terrain LOD is the big main thread killer.  Lowering that is the only thing i can find that makes a significant difference.

For me, it is Terrain LOD as mention but also Photogrammetry...seems to be very cpu-intensive on my system.

I also have a 3080 and a 10900KF running at 5.3 all cores with HT off. At the moment I'm using DLSS (Balanced) and DX12 at 4K. TLOD and OLOD are both at 150 and my CPU is nearly sleeping at max 20% utilization. My GPU stays mostly between 40 and 50% with frames limited at 30 FPS and most settings at ultra. Only the VRAM is completely maxed out.

So yes, the terrain LOD is the most CPU demanding setting.

Do you guys thinking that upgrading from an i9-9900k to an i9-1200k would make a big difference?

I would think so.  But be sure to do research.  Sometimes the cpu with many cores (like a 12900K, for example) may cost more than a cpu with fewer cores (12700K) and the latter may do just well in the sim as the more expensive higher-cored cpu.

Also the intel 13xxx series cpu's should be released in a few months time.  I'm kind of holding out until that happens, to at least see what they offer.

Exactly why I went with the 12700. Easier to keep cool also.

If you lock your FPS to 30 you should not be CPU caped. My main CPU that MSFS run around 80-95%.

Run unlimited and you will always be CPU caped, as your asking for max FPS all the time.

I cap at 40.

Well thats my point your FPS are at a level where you main core is max out, lower it and it wont be. Have a look and you will see.

The sim will run smoother if you lower your FPS untill you see that core around 85%.

As for DX12 and the undate I have no idea.

Got it...I find the screen very sluggish when panning around with less than 40fps...

Also do you lock to 30 via NVIDIA CP? VSYNC enabled?

DLSS allows me to run 4k capped at 45 fps now and using my cheap GSync monitor (which doesn't work below 43 fps), absolutely no screen tearing.

60 FPS is possible, but everything gets a bit hot.  I notice 45 fps is a decent compromise.  Panning and sideways scrolling of scenery on take-off etc. are all much smoother, plus everything is running at decent utilisation levels (CPU / GPU) while staying cool and quiet.

Call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind, but I prefer Rob.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.
