But *probably way more smoothness, even if you don't notice it. DX12 , for me, was never about gaining FPS, but gaining smoothness with equal cpu core usage and not one thread being hammered.

I agree that it does 'feel' smoother, and I am sticking with DX12 DLSS Quality for now. Most of where I fly uses 10GB of VRAM. I have not seen it use less than 10GB under DX12.

At KSEA it was not smooth under DX12. That is all on me and my settings. I may have to compromise and lower my settings. Or perhaps the implementation will get optimized. How often will I exceed my VRAM limits? I have only seen it once at KSEA. I usually land at small grass or dirt strips, which are not a problem for VRAM. I will just keep flying where I normally do and see what happens.

I am getting the artifacts bad using DX12 with 3080ti, 4K default ultra settings.  I have to stick with DX11 until DX12 is further optimized.

Hello all!

When my i9-9900k is the bottleneck when having a 3080, what are the settings that I could reduce that will impact the CPU the most?

Clouds from ultra to high seems to help me.

I hope they don't further optimise it to suit those with lower end GPU's and less VRam.

Quoting someone over the MSFS forums, they got it spot on I think:-

hope this doesn’t get patched out for higher end cards, but is massaged somewhat for cards with less VRAM. In other words. don’t restrict VRAM usage arbitrarily for all cards, but find a way to limit it to available VRAM. If you have more, great, but if you don’t the sim won’t hit the limits by doing some kind of trickery. I hope this doesn’t lead to yet another graphical slider with arbitrary textual labels.

On a related note, have any of you noticed the stuttering you sometimes get when panning your view around quickly? In SU9 I get this from time to time, and its definitely locational, but is repeatable no matter how long you sit waiting for everything to load. Watching the dev. mode FPS counter VRAM usage readout I can see it sitting usually in the 7-8 of 24GB, and never climbing above. It constantly seems to be loading, and unloading content despite caching being set to Ultra.

Hopefully DX12 has put that to bed.

The 3080 Ti has 12 GB of VRAM, I personally saw 13-14 GB used at 3440x1440 in a non-PG area and without add-on scenery (just the FBW A320).

That's what I meant by 24 GB. Poster Ianrivaldosmith has a 3090 who I was replying to.

I find the screen very sluggish when panning around with less than 40fps

I'm capped at 30 and have no sluggish panning whatsoever.  Try setting Low Latency Mode to ULTRA in NVCP and also be sure you have Off Screen Pre-Caching set to ultra.  Capped at 30fps reduce CPU demand by roughly 25% which is huge.  Don't be afraid to drop T-LOD to 120 on super complex arrival airports-you won't notice the difference from 150 anyway.  Also, since optimized DX-12 accesses multiple CPU cores better than DX11 that may also give you the headroom you would like.

Terrain LOD is the big main thread killer.  Lowering that is the only thing i can find that makes a significant difference.

That was not always the case. Earlier this year (before SU8/SU9?) I could keep Terrain LOD up to 400 even in demanding areas. Meanwhile 200 seems to be to too hard in some areas. At least in my observation, this is a degradation and I don't understand why this has happened. Is there a benefit which I don't see why the Terrain LOD / CPU load is now such an issue?

No idea what happened either.  I used to use 200 on my rig, now it's at 120.   I recall an earlier SU that reduced the load on the main thread, then  it all went to word not allowed with SU8.

As far as I'm concerned this is the biggest issue that needs sorting when it comes to performance in this sim.

Don't use this if using DX12, it has no effect:-

“Low Latency Mode” does not have any effect in DX12 or Vulkan. In DirectX 12 and Vulkan, the engine decides when to queue the frame and the NVIDIA graphics drivers have no control over this.

I too couldn't use TLOD  higher than 120 in SU9. With SU10 and DX12 I have been able to pump it up to 200 in demanding areas and its still smooth with decent fps. I haven't tried higher than 200 yet.

What bothers me the most with lowering LOD is that the airport ground markings look blurry and not as sharp.

I wonder why as that is not happening here in fact I don't know why it would have any impact on "ground markings".

It does, try it. Go from 50 LOD to 400 and you will see a huge difference. This has been confirmed by developers.

Thanks, I will.  From 150 to 120 though--could you do better than 50% in a double-blinded comparison?

Doubt you will see any difference from 150 to 120....But from 200-100, yes.
