A cautionary tale

Today, windows installed a regular update and a security update. After, I found I needed to reset ALL my sound settings in P3D and default settings in windows. So if your having trouble with hearing your aircraft or ATC, this might be why.

I have to reset the ATC sound in P3Dv4 after every Windows update these days.

Can you remind me what I need to reset? Just tuned into ATC and all the audio levels dropped.
Thanks

I have to do this after every computer restart unless I want P3D to continually drop in volume because of something stupid going on with Windows.

Permanent fix:

In the windows sounds settings for your audio device ensure you have the following settings:

“Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” = UNCHECKED

“When windows detects communication activity” = DO NOTHING

Cheers Eric, I'll give this a go.

It works but not exactly permanent, need to do this again on every windows reboot. Another silly nag, accessing the sound settings spins up any sleeping hard disks taking time to open it and increasing HDD wear. Can't recall this happening last year, must have crept in a recent major update.

Have the latest W11 version with all updates and I never need to go on and change it.  Settings always stay the same for me.

Eric -- it probably depends on what sound chip and drivers are used on the MB. Would be interesting to see if there is a pattern. I am on Win10 Pro without any issues. My chip is a Realtek ALC1150.

Ahh,  could be.  I use a Hyper headset with its own amp that is plugged in via USB.  I don't use my sound card at all.

Don't sound files need to go through a chip and then to an external amp?

USB headsets incorporate their own codec and amplifier circuitry.  Wired analog headsets use the codec and amp built into the PC's onboard sound device or add-on sound card.  Line-level devices take a low-level output from the sound device and run it through an external amp to a set of speakers.
