MSFS Weather Engine

What I thought was quite interesting from yesterday's QA was when Seb mentioned METAR data are active below 1000ft and within 2km from airports. I don't think I've heard that before.

He also mentioned the clouds are not effected by Metars..., seems to be just winds, baro and maybe visibility(?).  He also said not much has changed with this WX model in the last few updates.  I wonder what is still causing the abrupt WX changes that I continue to experience.....I guess it could be related to Meteoblue update but definitely see them more than I have in the early MSFS iterations.

Hmmm, you heard more than I what I could ear...

Should be more like METAR bellow MSA and a radius of 5 to 10 miles from the Airport Reference Point...

Sometimes I've heard Seb talking about weather stuff that reveals some lack of familiarity with basic meteorological concepts. Well, AFAIK he just recently started instruction as a private pilot and he is not comming from aviation / aeronautical engineering...

Well, actually same applies to Austin Meyer from LR when talking about some meteo concepts.... That's definitelly not their speciality 🙂

Yes that, and also how Meteoblue apparently blends some METAR data of its own in its global model/data (maybe that was already known but news to me)

I think it's great if that's the case. It means we will have dynamic weather in terms of cloud formations and even approaching storm fronts not interrupted by "METAR zones".

Well I'm not 100% sure, but I remember posting this right after he mentioned it. Did anyone else hear the same? Anyway it's easy to play it back to confirm.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't get expert advice from pilots and meterologists (did I spell that correctly?) 🙂 He's the CEO of a game studio, so Asobo would be kinda lost without any expert advice.

I am sure they have, if not from other sources for sure from Meteoblue...

True. And in SU10 they're further refining this blend as per the release notes:

Added interpolation out of METAR data when getting away from the METAR data (distance, altitude or time)

Thanks. He starts by saying "I can talk a little bit about it. Even though I don't know exactly how the entire system works." To me it just sounds like he's being humble. And honest.

  • Xbox's memory limitations have been the primary reason for degradation in cloud depiction IQ at least that was my interpretation of some vague commentary.   No worries here because Xbox is headed for more memory in future releases.  In Aprill '22 the development Xbox Series X devkit revealed 40Gb of faster RAM--so the article said.  So for our "10 year" product service life I think there is a strong likelihood of being able to exploit more RAM for better cloud rendering going forward.

You have a time stamp for that?

Totally agree....leave the cloud generation to Meteoblue!  Too many Metar reporting issues to have it rely solely on those.  I still wonder about the visibility...too bad no questions were asked about visibility generation in Live WX.  It still seems to be unlimited most of the time unless inside clouds/fog or rain.  The hazy summer air in many places can be a challenge to fly in some days with only 5-6 mile visibility but it seems they are still unable to produce this.
