AUGUST 25TH, 2022 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Earlier today at gamescom in Cologne, Germany, the team was proud to make some new announcements about Microsoft Flight Simulator. See below for details:

Local Legend VI: Junkers F 13: The world’s first all-metal transport plane, this innovative and highly influential aircraft is available now from the in-sim Marketplace for USD $14.99.

City Update 1 (CU1): a collection of five new photogrammetry cities from Germany: Hanover, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Bonn, and Cologne. CU1 is available now for free from the in-sim Marketplace.

New 40th Anniversary Edition details: we announced some more content that will be included when this FREE UPDATE releases in November. This is in addition to all the content that we previously unveiled at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase in June. Today’s new announcements for the 40th Anniversary Edition are:

  • Three new planes: Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, Grumman G-21 Goose, and Hughes H-4 Hercules (aka the “Spruce Goose”)
  • Four classic airports, including Chicago’s Meigs Field, the long-time default starting location in many previous editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator
  • Twenty missions from the franchise’s past

Finally, public testing for SU10 continues. Last week, we deployed a new build to testers (PC only) that was specifically targeted at improving performance in DX11 mode. The feedback from testers about DX11 performance with this build has been very positive so far. We will soon be releasing another SU10 beta build, this one for both PC (MS Store & Steam) and Xbox players. If you are participating in the SU10 public test, stay tuned for more information.

I wonder how Meigs Field is going to work. I mean, I'm as mad as the next guy that Daley bulldozed it but... For the most part I like flying the world as it is, not as it was.  I assume we'll be able to turn it off when we want to do flights in 2022?

I understand, but in all honesty how often will you fly close enough to even notice unless that is your destination.  Case in point, here is a link to my screen shot post from a flight into Midway today.  I flew right by that former Meigs location, and busy at 170 knots managing the approach, just under an overcast, with the city of Chi-town to distract me, I didn't even think about the Meigs location, much less notice it.  Just saying....

Ahh, it's not part of the base update. Gotcha.

I fly in and out of ORD all the time, and I notice the Meigs location every time I'm coming in from over the lake because I, too, spent a *lot* of time at Meigs in the old sim days. 😉

From the south from over CGT?  OK, understand.  Today I was on the PANGG3 arrival via FWA HALIE STERE, so I was out further over the lake on the way to Midway.  I fly GA and light personal jet (Hondajet) and KORD is not often my destination.  But I am familiar with the route along the shore from CGT to DEERE from my days with flights from KIND.

The 40th Anniversary update sounds like it is a base sim update, just like the GOTY update last year.

You can uninstall any handcrafted airport via the content manager even ones included in the base sim.

@ChaoticBeauty Late pine for you today. I’m on vacation in St Marteen and my duties here are obviously slipping 😂😂😂

Gee, I wonder where you're going to spend a lot of time getting jet blasted. 😉

Skiathos was just as good when I was there in May.  Maybe even closer to the aircraft than Sint Maarten.  I loved it!

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

😂😂😂

Thats what my wife said. Actually I’m not going to submit myself to the sand blast experience, but there are so many great vantage points to watch the planes coming and going. Unfortunately the biggest thing flying here is the Air France and KLM A330’s. Would love to have been here back in the days of the KLM, Air France and Corsair 747’s.

Aside from that, once here it made me realize how good a job FlyTampa did on TNCM and the surrounding area. After simming there for 15 or so years, when I landed and got out of the airport I almost felt like I’d been here before.

Yeah. The last time I was there was back before MSFS came out and I just had the default p3d scenery. When I installed the FlyTampa scenery I was very impressed with how close they got to the real thing. I actually like flying into that airport now. It looks right, there isn't a giant lake where the fuel depot is supposed to be, and the ocean looks a lot more like the Caribbean than it ever did in previous sims.

I was over at St Barts yesterday and could say the same about it and the job FT did with it as well. I went to that hill above the runway that the planes pass through on approach and got some really good videos of the planes coming over and diving in towards the runway. It was pretty close looking to what FT represents in the sim. Another one that made me feel like I’d been there before.

Definitely. St. Baarts in previous sims was a waste of time. I've spent tons of time perfecting landings there in this one.
