Flying near/through clouds tough on perf?

Featured Replies

Really having a tough time going through clouds or near them with my 12700K / 1080 Ti / 32GB ram system - fairly high end.

Medium clouds here at 1440p res.

Anyone experiencing the same?

Only if there's a lot of them. Anything above the VFR coverage settings knocks FPS by 25% when in close proximity. High clouds, 1080p, 6700XT, 12700K.

I wonder if this is why the clouds in XP 12 are blurry with very little definition.  My guess is, it was a challenge for LR to provide reasonable FPS in XP 12 with all the graphics upgrades already.  Clouds are generally an FPS killer in flight simulators.  I think LR pushed the clouds as much as they could, while keeping the FPS as reasonable as possible in XP 12. As I also come from a software development background, I can imagine the challenge it was for LR, it's not easy to raise the level of graphics while also keeping the FPS the same.

Hopefully, in future updates of XP 12, LR can find ways to optimize XP 12 to further to increase the FPS, so that they can also raise the quality of the clouds in XP 12.

That is why we have the early release beta, and why it was delayed. Iron out the bugs with a larger audience participating which you simply cant get from a small 200 testers, once those bugs are sorted, than im sure the  performance upgrades will come so they can start on the other stuff.. Mind you its pretty good untill your wall to wall clouds.

As I do not have xp12 yet I have to rely on YouTube and comments from my simmer friends already using ir.

One of them specifically bought a new MacBook pro 16 to BE able to Run xp12 and he reports getting between 40 an 70+ FPS but not lower, depending on having the sliders full right or with some not até ultra and / ir getting into dense cloudy skies.

Looks to me promising, and I really look fwd to test xp12 on my ryzen 5600x + 3060 ti 32 GB, which runs MFS super smooth.

You can just install the demo. Its the full deal just limited to 1 airport and 15 minutes. Doesnt cost you anything than if you want to purchase you already have the base there.

I know but the only problem is that I an away from home and my simming rig. That's the only factor, purchasing is a Must as soon as I get back 😁

I suspect its your 1080TI I have roughly the same specs but with a 3090TI and at max settings I can't manage 60FPS in default planes... The 30 series GPUS are dirt cheap these days might be time to upgrade,I went from a 1080 to a 3090TI last month and its a day and night difference.

The 1080 ti has been doing fine in msfs but I know am upgrade is near.  I saw a 3070 ti at best buy for under 500 the other day. Tempting.  But I've heard great things about the 40xx so I'll probably wait until after Christmas to see if they have their mid tier cards.

I don't see as much a drop in clouds though I run Half Refresh (30), but a drop you can watch happen, turning on the Red Lighting in the Cirrus. As you turn up the the Red light that FPS drops horribly watching the readout, from a steady 30 down to 20.. Haven't tried other AC's yet but ouch. I have an RTX2070 8Gb Ryan, I would think your 1080ti is pretty comparable.

I would assume this is relative to one's income, their particular priorities in life, home budget and other expenses in life, unless one has a "pile" of wealth to draw upon.  😃

I only recently upgraded to a used 1080Ti and I am very happy I did, but have absolutely no spare funds to spend another $1,000 or so on a new graphics card.

Two things, ONE -  I will rely on setting adjustments, and perhaps updates that might improve this situation.

TWO - you know it might be helpful to be able to "switch" between the new volumetric clouds and previous XP11 clouds; within the sim...I can get pretty good looking skies in XP11 with my addons.

My GPU is screaming even at 1080p. Vulkan has let them max the card's brains out such that 1440p in 12 might be the last straw for the 1080ti. Standing ovation for that GPU, though.

I wondered this too. The ray tracing for 3D clouds has got to be a GPU shader nightmare in terms of if-then branching. I would think that more solid-looking clouds would be less work for the ray tracing. Maybe LR is using more of the ray budget up closer to the camera? That might explain the really distracting Perlin noise dancing off in the distance. AA can't cover that up.

The best looking clouds out there are in DCS, but those are essentially static. It would appear that fully dynamic clouds are pretty expensive.
