low gpu usage and very low fps MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

I would reinstall your graphic drivers by doing a DDU first.

Hello everyone, I am new.

I begin by telling you my components:
i9 9900k
RTX 3080
32 GB RAM
1 TB SSD NVME2
850 watts PSU
z390-f
Game in 4k
good components

Now when I try to play msfs, I notice (with msi afterburner) that the pc performance is low.

Low gpu usage and low fps.

I've never had this problem with any other type of game, not even trying to play the newest and heaviest ones.

Assuming that even when 1080p is very low, the fps are always the same.

And that's why I can't understand what the problem is.

The pc temperatures are normal and do not even touch the temp limit

Please i need help i really enjoy playing that game but playing it in 10 fps totally ruins everything.

Are you sure, that your monitor cable is connected directly to the graphic card output and not to the mainboard?

Maybe you can also read through this:

Strange problem though.

Have you tried to close all programs in the background? Maybe you can do a clean start of windows and try again?

For one guy Citrix was the problem:

TheMarvinX,

I cannot thank you enough for your post!!!
I have been suffering 2fps and limited by rdrthread a few weeks after SU6 as well.
I have tried many hours of troubleshooting the problem, updating/reinstalling the graphics driver, tweaking MSFS graphics settings, removing files from my community folder, multiple re-installations of MSFS2020, upgraded to Windows 11 all to no avail!

I uninstall citrix and boom!
Problem solved!!!

So looks like its an external program causing the issue.  Nothing to do with GPU, CPU or drivers.   Weird issue though like why would an external program affect current running programs.

Hmm, now the GPU frame time is the problem. I would check cables (as mentioned), nVidia control panel settings (default with max performance or some "funky setting")... What's the render scaling. Etc. A 3080 (Ti?) should not struggle like this in 4K. Most of us are mainthread limited - and in the recent beta some claim that it's hard to get GPU limited even when cranking render scaling up high.

the cable is connected right ... I can't really understand the problem ... Do you think formatting the pc back to normal?

I don't think it's some external program ... Anyway I send you the apps that I use in the background when I play msfs ...

App in Background:

Msi Afterburner + Rivatuner (I have already tried to close them while playing)

HWINFO 64 (I have already tried to close it while playing)

XPG RGB Software

Razer Central

Steelseries GG

ICUE

Malwarebytes

FSRealistic

No. Did you check the nVidia control panel settings? To be safe I would leave everything on default except “prefer maximum performance”.

Citrix or other solutions can for example mirror your screen and use the windows API to capture the screen.

I had a software for „Ambilight“ LED stripes doing this which caused severe performance degradation in games.

I don’t know what the issue with Citeix was for this guy or what Citrix does exactly in the background - but it’s always safe to close EVERYTHING, also from the right bottom of the taskbar, to make sure that nothing is running in the background to interfere.

For example I read a lot of times that tools like Asus Armory for controlling fans and LEDs cause some very weird issues.

PROBLEM SOLVED! How did I do it? I just formatted the pc, everything ok now! Thank you all for the help you have given me !!! Thank you

>Reformat PC

Sucks in today's tech age we still can not easily trouble shoot performance issues and have to resort to such drastic measures.

When I see a drop in GPU power, I immediately reinstall the driver. This usually helps.

Hi all.

Suddently, I'm having the same problem. Been some time away from simming, then couple of days ago, I launch the sim and fps looks much lower. I check using dev mode FPs display, and I'm always "limited by main thread", while before it was blinking between render thread and main thread with much higher and more constant FPS.

I check GPU usage, and it's stuck to 60%, while before it was 100%. CPU cores are all used equally, between 50% and 80%. Nothing changes if i run it in 4k, 2k, FSR2 on performance or balanced.

What may have happened? I would like to avoid the format option, it's the same pc i use for work and would be quite time consuming to set up all the rest of data and programs.

Tanks in advance for the help.

P.S.

System is:

13600K, 7900XT, 32gb ddr5 5200, 850w, Z690 mainboard with latest bios and drivers, triple monitor.
