French Toast

Featured Replies

Sunday.  French toast.  I just finished mine.

I have what I think is a unique way of making French toast.  I only make one slice.

I crack a single egg into a bowl and beat it thoroughly with a whisk.  Then I take a slice of white bread and put it on a dinner plate.  Pour a little of the beaten egg onto the slice of bread and spread it with a butter knife.  Press the egg in with the flat part of the butter knife and then add some more and repeat the process.  Don't pour so much egg onto the bread that it spills off over the side.  Now turn the slice over and repeat the process with the remainder of the beaten egg.  I just use pure egg.  No milk mixed with it.

Now set the plate aside to let the egg diffuse into the bread.

Now it's time to start the rest of my breakfast.

Boil the water for the tea.  Put a half piece of sausage patty in the skillet and start cooking it.  Pour my half glass of vegetable juice.

Now I cut and apple in half and slice and dice one of the halves.  Peel a small orange and segment it.  Grab a handful of grapes...6 or 8 will do.  Put the fruit into a small bowl.

By now the water is boiling so pour it in the cup with a teabag or, as I do, into a teapot with loose tea in the caddy.  I use Lapsang Souchong tea.

Turn over the sausage patty in the skillet and then carry the fruit bowl and half glass of vegetable juice to my computer desk.  Move the keyboard out of the way to make room for your breakfast dishes.

Back into the kichen and remove the sausage patty from the skillet and place it on a folded paper napkin.

Wipe the skillet free of sausage grease with a paper napkin and add a teaspoon or so of butter into the hot skillet.  Then with a large spatula take the egg-soaked slice of bread and put into the melted butter in the skillet.  Let it fry for about 2 or three minutes and turn over to do the other side.  Put several pats of butter on the cooked side of the bread and let it melt.  After a couple of minutes put the French toast back on the dinner plate, add the half a sausage patty, pour on a bit of maple syrup and it's done.  Don't forget to turn the stove off.

By now the tea should be dark color in the teapot.  Pour into a cup.  Carry the plate of French toast and your tea to your computer desk and play card games while you enjoy your breakfast.  I play Hearts, Solitaire, Spider Solitaire and Free Cell in that order.  It helps you eat slow to aid your digestion.

I do this every morning with a different entre each day.  The vegetable juice, tea and fruit bowl are the same every morning.  But I have seven different entrees to fill out the week.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  It's also my favorite meal of the day.  I don't care what we have for dinner as long as I can have my breakfast du jure.

Noel, I've just saved your recipe for breakfast. Looks tasty. I'll try it this weekend... or even maybe tonight for supper. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Here in Argentina there's something curious for outsiders: people love to have a meal like the one you describe, but at tea time (or what we call here, merienda). For actual breakfast, a tea, coffee or mate, and just a couple of biscuits or sweet croissants.

I do use a bit of milk as it helps the bread soak in the egg more quickly. I warm precooked frozen bacon in the pan for a few seconds before cooking the F toast.  My coffee maker had my coffee ready for me as it was on a timer as set up last evening. I beat you into the air by 3 to 5 tenths of an hour and ate my fresh apple after takeoff.  I had my orange juice with some vodka after finishing my flying.....  Ahhhhh!

I get my citrus from the tangerine I peel for my fruit bowl.  The vegetable juice takes care of the veggies.

I also take my coffee and more citrus prior to breakfast,

I emerge from my morning ablutions at about 6:00 AM and nurse a cup of coffee until 7:00. That's the only coffee I drink all day. Then I squeeze half a lemon into a half glass of hot water (no sugar) and nurse it until 7:30. Then I start breakfast and play computer card games while eating it so I don't wolf it down too fast.  About 9:00 I am finished with breakfast and wash my dishes.

I do fry up fresh bacon on my bacon mornings but use pre-cooked sausage patties on my sausage mornings.

The only alcohol I drink anymore is in a half glass of red wine before I go to bed between 10:00PM and 11:00PM.

Gag me with a fork, Doug! 🍽️  Don't remember if you every said if you were in the service, but I remember the stories about boot camp pancake batter and what may have been whizzed into it!  🤔  I'll trust what I make at home!

Maybe because I enjoy making breakfast Doug.  And I get exactly what I want cooked my way.  And I can play my computer card games while I'm enjoying my meal.  It's a nice way to start the day.  When I go to bed at night I think about what I'm going to make for breakfast in the morning.

About MREs.  They were a dam sight better than C-Rations.  I used to take them back packing with me.  Don't ask me where I got them.  Senior Master Sergeants have secret sources.

During my time in the Army, it was the Spec4 Mafia that were the "secret sources."  😆

Senior NCOs are generally left alone, Fr Bill, because they can do things officers can't do.  Non-commissioned officers are not 'gentlemen' the same sense commissioned officers are. And they know where a lot of skeletons are hidden.

The CO asks the first sergeant, "Can you get me an #####?"  The first sergeant says, "I'll see what I can do sir."  Before the day is out an ##### is sitting in the COs office.  The CO calls the first sergeant into his office and says, "Thanks for getting mean ##### but please don't tell me where you got it."

Across the base another CO is screaming, "Where's my #####?"   His first sergeant is going to say, "I have no idea sir but I'll look into it."

That's the way shortages of #####s are never filled but when a CO really needs one an ##### will miraculously show up.
