I have an intermediate education level when it comes to electronic circuits,  but I took one look at this connector and knew that whoever designed it was high as a kite.

Common sense stuff would be that they should have made a BETTER connector. Pure and simple. In all my years this has never been an issue until now. Its on you Nvidia.

Rumour has it the next gen AMD GPUs standard power draw over 400W, more watts for more performance seams to the norm nowadays.

Cablemod and Seasonic also have right angle adapters in the works.

Thus  far there have only been four or five confirmed examples of burning, I suppose a batch of defective adapters might be feasible. The jury is still out on the precise factors involved and how much of an issue it will be. Interestingly though, AMD are avoiding the connector for their next cards. 

Why they thought it was an awesome idea to go with down sized connectors for greater power draw god only knows.

Apparently one of the reasons was because four 8 pin connectors wouldn't fit on the PCB. 🙄 Suppose it didn't occur to them to make the PCB a tad bigger.

• Bending or kinking the wires directly at the connector of the adapter puts too much pressure on the solder joints and bridges, so that they can break off.
• The inner bridge between the pins is too thin (resulting cross section) to compensate the current flow on two or three instead of four connected 12V lines.
• NVIDIA has already been informed in advance and the data and pictures were also provided by be quiet! directly to the R&D department.

And they won't be using the connector type that Nvidia is having the problems with. It will be the same as the 6xxx series.
