CPU Upgrade Advice.

Thank you all for your replies - very helpful.

I have always owned an Intel based PC and am very tempted now to go for an AMD 7800X3D or 7900X3D or 7950X3D, though the FPS gain with the latter two appears to be minimal.

Any recommendation for a very good AM5 motherboard e.g. budget, middle and high end?

I use an ASUS® ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI (WIFI 6E, DDR5, PCIe 5.0) - ARGB Ready!

You; I’ll wait it out until the next gen and pick up whatever they release in 3D next time to use with 2024.

I saved a little money going with the 650 chipset rather than the 670. Same board, just drops one of the M2 slots.

Well, if we're going to compare size…
My fans (Noctua NH-D15 CPU and Noctua NF-A14 case) are bigger than your fans 😉

Only things I'd change are air-cooled over water (personal preference) and 32 GB RAM. Otherwise, nice upgrade.

For medium budget, my Asus TUF Gaming B650 Plus. Rock stable with 2x16 GB DDR5 @ 6000 MHz and a 7800X3D.

water-cooled totally not necessary for AMD 78xx3D, adds unnecessary extra maintenance & complexity. my aircooled runs around 68-75 celsius.

I'm very pleased with my ASRock X670E.

I've had good luck with ASRock boards over the years.  And sometimes one of their boards will be well-featured and little less expensive.

I went with Asus on my AM5 simrig build this time.  But I may be building another AM5 for someone soon, and I may roll with an ASRock board for it.
