Have you tried Dynamic Lighting with SSAA? That alone made me move to a 3080.

The question is whether the GPU is maxed out in such a situation, or whether they are CPU-starved. There's not enough detail or data provided to determine, from them or from you.

Cheers!

I have a 9700K with 32GB, and I run at 2560x1600. I used to have a 1070, and Dynamic Lighting would bring it to its knees at night. Honestly, I'd probably save up a little more and get a 3070 to give yourself more room for increased resolution or multiple screens. The 3080 makes GPU limits (at least at my resolution) a thing of the past. On one of my last flights into KJFK (with the DD city, FSDT JFK and Taxi2Gate LFPG) using the PMDG772, here's my frame rate stats:

MIN = 19, P1 = 32, P5 = 38, P50 = 59, P95 = 60, P99 = 60, MAX = 66 [64,867 samples]

Cheers

Thanks Luke but do you not run into problems with 8gb of VRAM?

For me I try to find the sweet spot of performance/price.  That spot will vary depending on your budget.  Being somewhat analytical about it I would create a table to help me decide, as an example and using fictitious specs:

  • gpu     memory  overclocked    price
  • 3060   12GB            Y               $500
  • 3080     8GB           Y                $600
  • 3080   12GB           N                $800

Personally, I would go for at least 12GB as that should get you some additional longevity.  The other thing to consider is to also put 4000 series into your decision process.  Not as viable at the moment.  However, just in case you can hit the price point for you.

All 3080s have at least 10GB of VRAM.

Cheers!

I was about to pull the trigger for a 3060, but went for a 3060 Ti instead. I don't regret it, despite having just 8 GB VRAM. For P3D (and a 1080p screen), I tend to keep textures in 2048x2048 (but AI and GSX resized to just 1024x1024 with mips). However, I gave myself permission to use 4k textures in user aircraft.

i have mind about an 3060 12 GB, because my 8 GB card already surprised me with CTD´s caused by RAM overrun, in case i put the textures and density settings to high. At Airports like EHAM, EKCH by FlyTampa and even at EDDH by Simwings my SIM consumes about 5 to 7 GB of my 8 GB VRAM and i don´t want to mind about possible CTD´s based on that anymore, but want to use high resolution textures. The issue for me was just, that the overall lower performance of the 3060, compared to my 2080 8 GB let me hesitate to get one.

At least today, after hours of monitoring the actual market situation, i decided to purchase an RTX 3090 with 24 GB VRAM instead. Well, i know it´s really overdone, but not knowing what the future will bring,  i´am prepared hopefully. Instead of the 3060 12 GB i thought about to get an 3080 12 GB instead, but because the price for it is already about 1000 bucks and no one of my dealers got one in stock for the next several weeks, i came across the 3090 24 GB for another 300 bucks more. Who cares...sometimes you have to be crazy.

In case i would have actually an RTX 1070 ti or 1080 ti, i would have gone for the 3060, so it´s for sure a very good budget card. In short words, it allways depends on you individual setup, goals and how much it worth it for you.

I feel for you Bernd. 😉 Sometimes there's an overwhelming "urge to splurge" as they say! Not sure if that really translates into Deutsch though?

Enjoy your 3090 and happy simming!

If I upgraded to a 3080, would I see much performance difference in p3dv4?? Im trying to figure if I want to spend another $600 this year for another GPU.

Indeed, in German it´s similar to "klotzen statt kleckern um jeden Preis" or "ich will es! und ich will es JETZT!"😊

I just want to add my experience with the new GPU i bought, because some may interrested.

As i have written here i´ve decided to get an RTX 3090 24 GB at least and i´am really surprised because i haven´t exspected much of performance increase for my SIM apart from VRAM limitations and my SIM was running smooth most of the time anyway. Remember that i´ve had in use an ASUS RTX 2080 8GB before. The major limitation of this card was the 8 GB VRAM, because it cause CTD´s when an airport add-on is very detailed and use high res Textures like EKCH or EHAM from FlyTampa. Though i was forced to turn down to 2048 textures and lower density settings. Here is what i´ve done with the new card. First i just replaced the 2080 with the new 3090 without  touching the driver or the settings. After i fired up my SIM PC the new card was detected and setup without any problems at all. At this point i´ve left all settings in the NVIDIA driver and in P3D untouched as they where set for the 2080. First thing i´ve noticed that the driver has automaticly deactivated the upscaling setting and set the correct native HD-resolution of my screen in P3D. I´ve made some tests and i can´t notice even a single stutter, no matter how dense the scenery, textures or clouds are.

This made me brave to increase the settings in P3D. I´ve set the secenery complexity to far right, "ultra" i think and using high res textures of 4028. In general i´ve set all GPU relevant settings to their maximum. The result is still a 200 percent smooth Simulator without any single stutter or else. I´ve made the whole weekend several legs across Europe, from Helsinki to Hamburg and to EHAM and EDDN and LSZH. Absolute no stutter at any situation. I noticed that the VRAM consumption at EHAM and EDDH was arround 7,8 GB, but now i can say "who cares". I even disabled texture streaming, because it´s not needed anymore to prevent from VRAM overdue.

Some of you may think "hey, it´s an 3090", but i wasn´t ecspecting this performance increase for P3D, having in mind it´s mainly CPU driven and can´t participate on GPU based performance like other "Games" do. So i´am really happy of my decision to invest into this expensive GPU. And i noticed a little side effect: In times where we scared of energy losts for heating because of several gas shortning, this card really can help to heat up your rooms to stay warm and healthy.
