So some people complaining about sun glare in XP12 ?

I thought I was the only one lol. But yes, I do also prefer the lighting and colour gradient of Xplane 12. It just captures the feel of actually being there if you know what I mean. A little off topic and I don't know how to explain this better, but Xplane 12 also captures the height/altitude rendering much better.

On paper you would think MSFS would win hands down, but the things XP12 do right overcome any negatives.  Importantly though, although we may feel the atmosphere looks and feels more alive, there will be plenty of people who find aspects of MSFS more important - I just wish they wouldn't post here all the time 🙂

Don't forget that "nuke" over-exposed effect is how the camera sensor capture it simply because it has way lower dynamic range than the human eye. 😉

This is kind of my gripe with XP and MSFS....  I don't want to see how it looks through a camera lens.... I want to simulate how it looks to my own eyes.  Obviously you can't look at the sun or ouch but it's not like the entire 1/3 of the sky is white out imo.

Sun glare is a real issue - just a quick search shows this.  The videos shows glare through a camera lens, but glare cutting out a lot of the sky (and ground) is a real issue for human eyes too.

I understand why many people find the glare effect in sims overdone, but for me it is actually underdone.

In real life, low sun glare can effectively blind a portion of the field of view, and even the silhouettes of the objects against the sun become no longer visible.

I think the issue is that the effect is not so easy to reproduce in a realistic way on a monitor.

Most realistic reproduction of sun glare I've seen in DCS years ago, it was exactly like real life. There are YT videos showing it but I can't find them right now. I don't know if the effect is still present in the current DCS version (I don't have it installed), they changed a lot of things in the graphic engine so I don't know if it's gone or not.

Sun glare is very important in aerial dogfight, so I guess that was an important push for them to recreate it in a realistic way.

Yep, fighter pilot famous line - 'Beware of the Hun in the sun'.

Pretty mych this. XP12 is just odd with its whiteout. At least I can not relate to it flying in northern Europe (Latitude 60 degrees).

But lucky enough, we can tone it down via datarefs...

Personally I’m in two minds over sun glare in sims, yes it’s simulating a real world phenomenon, but it’s also a real world inconvenience that makes the experience less pleasant .
I suppose the answer would be not to fly in the sim around times of sunrise or sunset, but for people who fly in real time that isn’t an option.

As I VR user I too would prefer the glare to be portrayed as it is seen by the human eye and not through a camera , but I suppose the developers find it easier to use photos and film of sun glare to replicate rather than going outside and staring at the sun.

This time of year when heading west over the Atlantic on an early afternoon departure you literally have the sunset in your eyes for about 4 hours as you keep pace with the setting sun, it’s a real pain. Hiding behind a large newspaper used to help, but I no longer read or watch mainstream media 😉

I agree with the OP. The other day I was in the car with the sun very low above horizon, the worst possible time for glare. I really had trouble seeing the road ahead and the traffic, and the effect was worsened by the dirty windshield.

I think XP is doing the best job here. Probably even XP is underestimating the glare compared to RL! Hopefully they will not dumb down realistic features as other sims are doing. On the contrary, they should add MORE glare effects, as those listed in the linked aviation article: wet asphalt, bright snow, dirty windshield, etc.

My final take on this matter.
XP12 looks like it's filmed from a Gopro 7 from 2018 minus the Yellow tint (that's where my screen grab is shot from a GP7 Silver). But if that's what most simmers wants, then so be it. I can tell you the real issue was not the actual sunlight on this approach but the glare from the flooded fields (due to melting of the snow)

From your two photos I suggest the glare from XP12 is not enough because there is no glare from the ground 🙂 Apart from that XP12 is pretty close to the real photo.

I just used Biology's Enhanced Visuals (guy behind Enhanced Cloud- and Skyscapes) from his Discord, modifies the nuclear sun, sky colours and lighting. Looks beautiful.

Which is a still image from a reduced bitrate GoPro video-footage, with a shoddy lighting levels. Certainly not professional in any way.

This should not be a measuring stick of any sort IMHO.

Although, your photo doesn't seem very different than what I experience when looking against the sun when the sun is low. I'd say it is not too far from real sun glare.

The measuring stick I'm using are my eyes, seeing sun glare in real life.
