Not seen anyone with Apple hardware make these complaints.

Strange that....

Its almost like its exclusively a windows problem.

(joking, those are already fixed for 12.06 afaict, but the fix broke other things)

Windows and Linux problem.

  • No, just no. This is a major issue which makes the simulator borderline unusable especially if you are flying an aircraft with a large dark-colored cockpit. I'm genuinely disappointed that Goran

  • These are the two sides of the same coin. The core of the issue is that the scene has such a high dynamic range that a single global exposure that's applied to the entire scene is not enough to produc

  • @Bob Scott I think you'll agree this one has gone way too long, complete with veiled insults from efis007, and into such irrelevant territory, that it may be time to slap a lock on it.

I never have seen such dark cockpits (at least not on my monitor) and I also wonder why some do and others don't. As someone mentioned something with mobile phones screens etc.: the look/exposure HAS something to do with the monitor/screen. Comparison of my mobile phone (brightest setting) to the monitor (not even the brightest setting).

Especially the second and third video with the cockpits of the C172 and the B737 show it.

Hi Murmur,

Thanks for the tip on the autoexposure mod. I found it an improvement.

The top shot above appears zoomed out a long way, plus the view is centered on the outside view - no wonder the panel is dark. Set a correct FOV and even just repositioning the view a few degrees down will brighten the panel.  Better still, use an eye/head tracker so the view is always where your eyes are pointing and then the lighting will look good.

However, I never see panels as dark as in your screenshots.

They appear only this dark, due to the exposure time of my camera (and possibly other factors). Otherwise they would appear brighter. You only have to compare both "whites" below. Nevertheless they are still better and brighter than the upper "big FOV" screenshot from another user.

What I actually wanted to show is the look of the cockpits if you use different screens. And there are differences ... Q.E.D. 😉

seeing just how dark the cockpit of the 744 looked even in my "glance down" view on one of my monitors I don't otherwise use for XPlane is why I added the scripting for the sun visor.

(for 2D I have all quick views bound in the cockpit; look left, right, FMC, forward out the window, forward and down, MCP, Overhead, Pedestal, Copilot seat looking forward down left, in VR the lighting is pretty much always perfectly balanced vs what I am looking at)

____

But given some of the more vocal complaining is also accompanied by zero acknowledgement that having a dark cockpit while staring at the sun is actually a good thing visually and correct within the limitations of the display, I think there is a fairly high degree of dishonesty about what they actually want.

As far as I can tell, complaints about dark cockpits in these circumstances are actually just complaints that the cockpit is ever in shadow, they want the cockpit lit like its under a 100kW lamp 100% of the time, they don't care that having the sun in your eyes while flying is a very real world problem that significantly obscures the view of the instruments and they find it unexceptable that the default lighting for all cockpits of every aircraft in xplane is not lit by a 100kW lamp 100% of the time.

There isnt that much point in discussing anything with people who actually want this, because imho they are never going to get what they want unless they mod the aircraft lighting themselves.

Not me, I agree on this. Indeed, I already proposed in the recent past that sun blinding is added in X-Plane. IL2 had a good recreation of that.

"Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

What's more annoying is that sometimes transitions between light and shade are sudden, not smooth.

Where?

Inside the cockpit, when the aircraft moves and the position of the light also changes.

Ill add this from another post I made on topic

Lets add some science into this and why this issue will never please everyone.

This is all about ones opinion, and no two people will ever agree on much. But lets add all the other unstated issues and variations. These things Laminar cant fix, notably the one above.

1. Your eye site. We all perceive the world different, just ask any one who is colour blind and or tunnel vision. I have even seeing some dude wearing sun glasses while streaming. Obviously screen must be too bright.

2. Type of monitor.

These are all different, contrast range , blacks, color vibrancy etc Being ignored in this conversation.

I have 2 different monitors and I cant get them to match at all.

3. GPU and drivers. We all know the newer card are better and drivers have being noted to make a difference.

4. Room lighting. Try it . placing lights in different areas , see what happens.

5.Viewing angle, any one with Trakir or 3d will see what difference it makes just changing viewing angle a few degrees.

6. Developers. They have to deal with textures, lighting, angle and brightness. All dependent on time of day and external lighting conditions.

Now the only thing Laminar can do, is provide a base, no more no less.

If there is anyone clever enough to deal with all of the above, and be able to please everyone, Im sure Laminar would love to hear from you.

What have you done to match them?

I used to do color balancing monitors for tv studio. I know what im doing.

Well, I do. I'll see if I can record it.
