Can my i7-12700K keep up with a 4090

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a buyer lined up for my 3090 at a decent price and I’m looking at a 4090, right now I rarely see my CPU usage anywhere near 50%. I’m looking to get into a 40xx card for frame generation. Will my current i7-12700K have trouble being paired with a 4090? I’ve never really seen my CPU break into a sweat. I currently don’t have any plans to get into VR but maybe that’ll change in the future. I do really love my 55 inch Sony X90J

Would like to hear your thoughts, I did think about a 4080 but I figured if I’m going to do this I may as well go for a 4090

13900K bottlenecks my 4090 so a 12700K definitely will too.

Do you find this causes a major drop in performance even with frame generation? Most of the tIme my 12700K never seems to break into a sweat

Not really, you should be fine. I get 100-120 fps in all but the very worst situations.

Good to know, I know on paper there is a bottleneck but there’s always going to be a bottleneck. I’m not trying to run my TLOD at 400 or anything stupid, currently it’s at 180 with OLOD at 200. Mostly ultra settings with shadows turned down a notch and I lock my fps to 45

I’ve taken what that site says with a pinch of salt in the past. MSFS is a totally different ball game

What resolution?  You'll be happy I believe as long as you're at 1440p or higher.

So much depends on how and where you fly.  For instance I am primarily GA and into GA airports, 80% into surburban metro GA airports.  My goto aircraft is mostly the Hjet at FL330 and above. In your vicinity I usually fly into the payware KSTP with Minneapolis water fix and a pair of stadium addon sceneries.  I have found that I am busy enough during approach an final that I seldom even see the hi-res scenery rendering.  So the airport is what is important to me.  With still a 10700 3.8 and an RTX 3080 I need little more performance, especially at the current cost differential of selling what I have and buying new.  The cost increment vs scenery quality vs performance increment, based on what I have time to observe during approach and landing is so much laughable to me.  So far my passengers have not complained.  Of course they are all friends....

Should I decide to start in with clones, and buzzing inner city addon details, I might change my mind.  But currently I am into an MLB baseball team schedule and Indycar race schedule, and cruising between FL300 and FL 430.  Nuff said.

How are determining your cpu usage? I’ll wager you probably are cpu limited in a lot of scenarios but just not aware as your overall usage may only appear ~50% but at least one core will be at or around 100%. If you are just using Windows task manager, try a different tool such as MSI Afterburner or enable dev mode in MSFS with the fps performance overlay.

Looks like the calculator says the 12700k with the 3090 is exactly equal ie 0% bottleneck (running an UW 3440x1440)

My Left view client uses a 12700k / 4090 / 4K combo and it works very well.

It definitely can't keep up with it so to speak, given the 4090 is the fastest GPU on the planet and the 12700 is simply a "really good but not top of the range CPU"!

Ive got an 5800x3d which performs a little better than the 12700k in most games, and a 7900xtx which is, I think on average, around 25% slower than your 4090. I'm CPU capped whenever I'm at a busy airport in a payware aircraft, and gpu capped in the air with clouds.

My fps tends to drop to around 70 in the busiest scenarios but hovers around 130 in the air at 1440p ultra with render scaling at 120, and the object distance sliders at 150.

At 1440p or 4k it'll be a flawless experience with your system. Once you start to get to either current gen or last gen high end CPUs coupled with high end GPUs (4080, 7900xtx, 4090) this sim really is mind blowing. I'm playing on a 32" screen and I regularly have my breath taken away by the beauty and fluidity of it all.

I was flying the PMDG 737 yesterday, into a busy KSFO in stormy weather at around 90fps in vatsim. I could play competitive fps at that frame rate if I wanted, it's such a beautiful experience in a sim. You're hardware will do it real justice.

Anyway, apologies for the rant. Tl:Dr, yes it'll bottleneck it to some extent, but realistically speaking, it won't matter. Enjoy 🙂
