I just did a 3.5 hour flight from EGPF - LEIB in the Fenix. I ran HWINFO the entire time and this is what I saw for my main core:

P-Core 0 T0 Usage - Average 33.8%

P-Core 0 T0 Utility - Average 48.1% (I believe this reading too mirror what Win 11 task manager shows)

The main core at times did spike and hit the low 90's but it certainly did not stay pegged there for the entire duration of the flight. This was with TLOD & OLOD at 200 with FSLTL 

This tells me that my 12700K still has plenty of headroom with my current GPU and I would expect to see it working harder with a 40xx card. My main issue is that although I have the funds for a 4090 I am having trouble justifying the extra cost (lol) over that of a 4080 especially as I have zero interest in VR and for the last week and a half I have been using DX12 my VRAM seems to sit around 13GB. When I had my 3080TI before I never ran out of VRAM either. 

In my use case is a 4090 really worth spending north of $600 extra

I don't have any experience yet, but I have ordered a Gigabyte 4090, specifically the Gigabyte Gaming 4090 (not the OC one).

I consider the Gigabyte card to be an upper-half 4090 with all factors combined.  An Asus ROG Strix 4090 would be slightly better but for $300 more, and as mentioned, some of the cards exhibit nasty coil whine, too much to pay for a roulette wheel and a few more fps.  I almost went full-tilt ROG STrix but in the end I couldn't justify the $2,000+ price tag no more than it brings over the Gigabyte card, and I don't overclock video cards anyway, so a lot of what the Strix would bring me would be wasted on me.

I found the Gigabyte Gaming 4090 to be the overall quietest/best performing/cheapest combination, at least right now. 

@RJC68 I went 4090 because of YOLO (you only live once) and for once I wanted the top end card.  I figured if I'm going to spend that much then I might as well get the top end one, and I plan to keep it for 5 years.   But I wouldn't begrudge the 4080 at all.  It will be a good card for a lot of years also.

Your 12700K is still a strong cpu.  I think if you went 4080 you'd be fine with that pairing.  And you could save the price diff vs a 4090 to go towards a later cpu upgrade.  With your 12700K you have the luxury of sitting back and seeing what Intel will do with the 14th gen, or see how AMD shakes out with its 8xxx or whatever they have coming up.

I’ve never had the top end card until I got my 3090 last year (I know there was the 3090TI) so I know full well about the YOLO lol

I have an MSI 4090 24Gb GPU, and it is much more silent then my 3090Ti (which is still in use in another PC in my home). It also runs cooler, and uses less power then my 3090Ti does. I have it paired with a 13900K CPU and between the two, my bottleneck is balances between the two. I also have a 5800X3D that I used to run MSFS on (with the 3090Ti) and although it performed extremely well and was the best for MSFS when it first came out, my 13900K outperforms it handedly. Now, there are also plenty good CPU options in the Ryzen 7000 series, and between the Intel 13000 series and those, they are all good options for MSFS and a top end GPU like a 4090. The reason I went with a 13900K is simply that I did not have to buy a new motherboard, and I already had DDR5 RAM so all I had to buy was the CPU. Had I gone with an AMD Ryzen 7000 series I would have had to buy new RAM and Motherboard as well as the CPU's, which were also higher priced then the 13900K. But, that was my situation. I am sure if my situation was different, I would be equally happy with an AMD 7950X, 7900X or a 7800X3D. The takeaway for me is the absolutely awesome MSFS performance increase that the 4090 gives me over my 3090Ti. Oh, and I run at 1440P, upscaled, not 4K. Some will say performance is wasted, but I disagree. I am able to run several background apps while flying. My favorite aircraft to fly are the Fenix and the PMDG 737's and into the big, busy airports. And, for once, I have a system that is ahead of the power curve so to speak, with performance in the bank as more detailed scenery and aircraft starts to be developed and released.

Does the 13900K and 10900K have the same socket? I'm wondering if I can do a direct swap?

Well this morning I said good bye to my beloved EVGA FTW3 3090 and now have a Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090 in the trunk of my car. 
Fun times ahead lol 😀

No, they do not. The 12000 series and the 13000 series use the same socket though. The 10900K uses the LGA 1200 socket, whilst the 12000 and 13000 use the LGA 1700 socket.

When I got up this morning my wife asked if I had made my decision, I told her I still wasn't sure. She looked at me and said I work hard and deserved this so just go get it. I have to say I do have the most amazing wife who knows my flight sim is my passion and she is right I do work hard lol. I did get a decent price for my 3090 so really it wasn't such a bad upgrade.

I did some testing after I got the card installed without FG and I am now in the Fenix with FG and 97 fps. I cannot quite believe it. Can you kind folks confirm these are the steps you all use:

• TV refresh rate - 100Hz (I can do 120Hz but left it from my previous settings)
• Gsync - on for full screen
• Low latency mode - Ultra (I believe this caps the fps 3 below the refresh rate of the display)
• Vertical sync - On (Is Vsync required because of extra latency)?
• Frame Generation In Sim - On
• No in sim Vsync
• Ultra preset selected
• Riva - Are you also capping fps here?

Appreciate all the replies to my original question, so far my 12700K is doing great

One more thing, are you using a different 12 pin adapter? I have a big case but still do not like the one that came with the card. Currently just using the standard 3 plugs as I have no interest in overclocking this card.

I don't work, let alone hard, but I still deserved it 😁, plus the amazing AMD Ryzen 7800X3D. I can't believe I am getting 75 fps and higher in VR!

all your concerns will melt away once you have a 4090 and a super fast CPU. over clocking days are over. my Ryzen 7800x3D with RTX 4090 which I got for christmas, though I didn't derserve it: 😇

I only have an inch between the GPU connector edge and the glass side panel of my case. I wasn't comfortable with the bend I needed to put in the 12vhpwr cable I got with my MSI PSU. So I'm using the ModDIY cable as an extension.

Cablemod wasn't yet shipping when I was ready so ModDIY won my business. Perhaps not as sexy as the Cablemod adapter, but it is cheaper and works perfectly.
