Yesterday a nice flight ; today a blinking desktop

Just tried the 4080 in the system ( normally the 4090 is being used ) but no difference.

The card is recognized without the need to install correct drivers, so I suppose I would need a 30 or 2p series card to be sure it is not the GPU driver.

- - -

To make a new user I would need access to menus which I don’t have.

- - -

Also I have tried with running at default clockspeeds but unfortunately also no difference.

- - -

Regarding ending services : I read about ending Windows Search and Windows Error Reporting Service that might help with a blinking desktop, but when trying to do so I get the message that nothing is wrong with them and they keep on running.

- - -

The most weird thing is that I can see both Explorer services are Running / Interrupted / Running / Interrupted etc …

Try to boot up in safe mode with your cpu internal graphics driver, then it should work, if not you must have some hardware issues.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The cpu is a 13900 KF that has no internal GPU.. I am looking if I can borrow a 2080 or 3090 ….

Safe mode with the current 40 cards is also blinking.

I disconnected all USB cables and disconnected the extra SSD’s . Only the M2 with Windows + MSFS is connected.

Hi

first up I would check Bios has right date/time

not sure about win 11 but on the login screen(win 10) bottom right power button

Hold down Shift while click restart

this will bring  up new screen open trouble and this will give you access to command line

hope this helps

Found the culprit:

Loading into Safe Mode by Restart + Shift I could enter system restore

I tried the latest 2 smaller updated but after a restart still a blinking desktop.

But after doing a system restore to the situation before the Windows update from 27 July. ( 2023-7  22H2  KB5028254 ) the pc started correctly…

I want to thank everybody for their suggestions !

@GSalden,

thanks for the feedback, and BTW although I was not sure that might be the cause (although I believe I mentioned the Win updates somewhere above in this thread...) I spent the whole morning yesterday dealing with problems due to that Win10 update, where I work 😕

One of the main reasons I, at home, promptly migrated and adopted for good Win 11 - at least those disruptive updates don't bother me any longer...

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

Yes I have exactly the same problem, every time Windows does an update. Not the NET updates nor the security fix updates, only the "cumulative updates".

It happens every time.

If you see the power button on the screen do like GSalden said: hold down shift key and click restart.

If you can't even see the power button, then push Control + Alt + Delete to get to the windows task manager. It will always show up, even on a totally black and blank screen. Then instead of clicking on 'task manager to run it, instead find the power button in lower right corner and use that (hold down shift key and restart).

On reboot you can use system restore like GSalden did (that worked for me), or alternately you can click the windows update icon and remove the last Quality updates. Do not remove the Features updates. Reboot and Windows should work fine.

Actually if you next go to Windows Settings you will find the quality updates are listed as installed, they were not removed. I don't know why. But that has been my experience the last 6 or  7 Quality updates (the Windows updates from Microsoft).

So, you have your choice of removing windows updates or using system restore, all from the same special boot screen that comes before the desktop tries to boot up.

I just reinstalled the Sane 22H2 update and the pc booted normally.

In the next few days I will see if the issue returns or that it was a one time problem.

Gerard are you on WIN11 or WIN10? I for myself changed to 11 months ago, no worries here on my side with my 5 monitor setup.

May I suggest good backup software in case a system restore is unavailable?

I use Macrium Reflect 8 on my Windows computers and it saved my life multiple times and it is really fast too.

In fact it is so reliable for me that I can experiment a lot with my computer and roll back in an instant.

Oh, well I hope that solves it.

I was about to give you a suggestion about doing a taskkill via cmd prompt but nevermind.  Don't do it.  😃

How were you able to get Windows to let you re-download an already-downloaded update?
