Quest Pro: Initial Reactions

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I did get a Quest Pro; so far it is sharper than Quest 2.  Now, I will post much in-depth experience as I go through my testing with the sim.

So far I am using OpenXr in Turbo Mode as it is giving me constant 30fps in Commanche 250.

My hardware is older and I was debating to buy a new pc or Quest Pro.  I opted for Quest Pro (new pc next year when pcie 5.0 Nvidia 5000 series cards).

It is a slick VR headset compared to Quest 2 (I am getting my wife Quest 3 in fall...and will compare that to).

Bottom line: - The gauges were sharp in Commanche 250 but stay tuned

the Quest Pro performs really well,

superb pancake lenses with dual QLED panels,

the resolution is quite acceptable & doesn’t overload the GPU when compared with other VR headsets,

also, AirLink with a good router provides solid wireless performance,

& the reliable Oculus Tray Tool works well for tweaking…

I've playing around with one for a while. It looks terrific in the cockpit, but not enough resolution imho for distant objects (understandably due to compression and low panel resolution).

If you haven't yet tried, you can turn off the sharpening applied using one of the tray tools. Makes it look a little more realistic / less cartoonish.

The dynamic foveated rendering does help, maybe 20% performance improvement, but it's a little slow to keep up with your eye movements. Maybe they'll fix it in an update.

Everything else about is really good, including the speakers imo.

it might just occur when tethering via usb. The meta link software seems to be adding a lot of it that you can override if desired.

Can you share a screenshot of the settings that you disabled?

The Oculus Debug Tool that gets installed with your headset's software can disable it. Screenshot below. The change seems to be persistent after a PC restart.

Thanks will try it later tonight.  So far the eye tracking with foveated tracking is amazing.

Does that mean your screen resolution (in pixels) is larger or do you mean that the image is simply sharper with the same screenresolution when compared to another headset.

Quest 2 user here wondering if Quest 3 will provide sharper images at the same resolution without a sacrifice on performance/FPS.

actual visible pixel resolution might be slightly better on the pro, but the clarity of the lenses is making things notably sharper for the close to mid range subjects. It doesn't gain much over the quest 2 for me when spotting distant aircraft. It'll probably take a higher res headset to achieve it if that's something you care for (i do, particularly in DCS)

I haven't used a quest 2 in a while, but I don't recall the performance being much different between the two without dynamic foveated rendering, and the pro probably has the performance edge over the quest 2 with it turned on.

Be aware that you will see some aliasing/shimmer in your peripheral vision with dynamic foveated rendering turned on.

There is some screen door effect. If you've ever tried a quest 1, it's somewhere in between that and the quest 2

Yeah, Quest Pro is way better than Quest 2.  There is slight bump on resolution but when dynamic foveated rendering is on, wow.  I am getting fps boost with OpenXR.

I have been using Immersed app for doing my work with giant multi monitors more than anything else; I can do proper work on this headset vs Quest 2.

Quest 3 will probably have same resolutions minus the dynamic foveated rendering (I am guessing, don't quote me on that).

not before later in 2025. pcie 5.0 is irrelevant, 3 nm process structure from TMSC with 3.0 GHz clock rate is though.

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Any noticeable difference in FOV compared with the Quest 2?

FOV is slightly bigger in Quest Pro vs Quest 2.  I can not go back to Quest 2 at all now.  My Quest 2 is all packed up (and giving it to my nephew).  At this point, if I were you I would wait for Quest 3 (as it is coming next month) and then we can compare.  Quest Pro does need OpenXR developer functionality enabled for MSFS2020 (it is on their website on what to do dev occulus account etc).

I believe the Quest Pro uses LCD monitors and not QLED? fact check me if I'm wrong? My next purchase will be a headset that can give true blacks for night time flying so I'm not flying around it a grey soup.
