Frame Generation on or off

Frame generation is a bit like gsync, it won’t work unless the sim Window is in main focus. So, if you switch to another monitor and use Charts etc… or even open them up on the same monitor, you’ll disengage FG, which can also cause a momentarily stutter.

yes Ian, the benefits of FG are way more than the small annoyance of clicking back and forth on another screen (4090) dont you agree !

That I can understand. But I'm not using or clicking though the monitor when these little fluctuations happen. I am on the main monitor and the mouse has been clicked on the main monitor just to make sure while taxing landing stuff like that.

Yup, I just purchased a mini pc and run my other monitors off that instead. They jus network to MSFS. That way, MSFS is always in focus.

Had the same issue and gone through a lot of stuff to trouble shoot the issue, have been building since FS2000 quite a few systems and upgrades 🤣 as an IT guy...
So I went from bios updates / driver updates / clean startups / USB hardware disabled / etc...
My goal was to run smooth without lag and stutters (some videos you see direct the lag and according the users it's smooth well I have a different standard for myself).

Every build is different with so many parameters regarding hardware and O/S and updates running.

So I can only share my story maybe some of you will benefit from that.
First the good news running completely stutter and lag free in two configs DX11 and DX12 with FG

The hardware is:
2K (2560*1440P) this due to my desk and relative close to the screen,165MHZ HDR GSync monitor. (fastest settings)
I7-12700k @ 49/39/36 HT on and Ecores / RTX4070TI OC edition
MSI MPG Z690 Edge ddr4 wifi mobo bios version (V1.9 / E7D31IMS.190)
several fast Samsung EVO M2 drives and USB controller hardware for MSFS.
TrackIR 5.4.2.27545
Software:
Windows 11 Pro O/S build 22H2 22621.2134
Nvidia driver 536.99
Disabled VBS in the bios and O/S

Running DLSS dll 3.1.30.0

One thing also is that trackIR benefit the most @ 60 or 120 FPS
MSFS with HDR10 running most settings at ultra a few at high and DLSS with DLAA or quality but find the aircraft displays/gauges sharper with DLAA (similar to TAA in DX11)

As for DX12 and FG the key is to disable latency modes because that will choke your graphics bus (lag stutters skipping frames) since FG is already low latency (that's why reflex is disabled also in MSFS when running FG)
Obvious HAGS should be on game mode is off also the flipping mode in Win 11 since DX12 is already up to that part.
Have locked my FPS in NVIDIA control panel at 60 FPS, it just stays there at the gate or in the air, no dip whatsoever in FPS (at Aerosoft EBBR and AIG at 100% with MSFS model updates and the Fenix A320) unlocked between 75 and 140 FPS.
Also my settings in NVIDA control panel plays a part happy to share those.
This gives me razor sharp textures with a TLOD of 140 and OLOD of 150 (since I'm vram limited) and the tin cities have time to build and are actually pretty sharp. unlocked FPS and it looks like a melted city.
GSync works perfect and is the key to have a smooth experience also.

As for DX11 HAGS is disabled no game mode and only reflex enabled in MSFS with DLSS DLAA or quality and locked at 48 FPS.

Both running butter smooth and lag free, currently at DX12 with FG and 60 FPS locked.

Long story short happy with FG and my setup 🙂

That’s been my methodology for years Ian, I have my i7 Dell box that runs my security camera software on the next desk so I’ve always tried to offload as much as I can to that PC that has multiple monitors leaving my flight sim pc and 55” Sony X90K for just MSFS

Yet another advantage TV frame interpolation has over Nvidia FG!🤣

Something like this is ideal, and the price is madness cheap:-

turned on the MSFS frame counter...also have the Nvidia counter on ...shows 59 frames on the left, but the MSFS shows 30. have FG on and vsync on in the NVCP if I have it off or application controled i get tearing. Have Gsync on

You Absolutely need to have Vsync on Bill, I tried every which way and Vsync needs to be on when using a Gsync display

I also have low latency mode set to Ultra (Not sure how much difference this makes). When you select FG in MSFS it automatically turns on Nvidia Low Latency and caps my fps to 3 below my TV refresh rate. I run my X90K @ 100Hz so I get 97 fps

Glad you got to a sweet spot. I think G-Sync, DX12, and FG are the ultimate way to play this sim at the current time with it being largely CPU limited.

Just a clarification, FG uses Reflex mode to minimize the latency, it's not that FG doesn't like low latency, it's a requirement... and Reflex ultra low latency in particular. Any other latency settings in NV CP are ignored and ideally should be off for games that support Reflex, like MSFS.

I'm curious why you prefer to lock your FPS at 60 rather than let it run unlocked.  Do you see less stutters or is it just a psychological thing?

That's right... it may sound counter-intuitive, but V-Sync (in NV control panel) is doing two things... apparently it's augmenting G-Sync in high FPS fluctuation situations to eliminate tearing, and when turned on with Reflex and FG, it's forcing a cap on FPS a few below your refresh rate to eliminate situations where FPS might exceed refresh rate to avoid tearing there as well.

You can turn off the low latency mode, that's for DX11.  As I mentioned in the post above, Reflex trumps it, and is a requirement for FG.  It is probably just ignoring it, so no harm as is.

I guess I'm more curious why the Microsoft flight simulator frame counter shows 30 but I'm running at 60 frames, which indicates on the left with the Nvidia control panel frame counter

I believe this is because the frame counter in side developer mode does not see the extra frames that are generated using FG

Are you running with Frame Generation on?  If so, that's exactly what you should see. The game counter shows how many frames the engine is sending to your GPU, the Nvidia counter is showing how many frames the GPU is rendering, and with FG on, it's doubling your frame rate.
