Just flight BAE 146 vs F28

Featured Replies

Any suggestions as to which is better to buy - BAE 146 or Fokker F28?

Thank

Michael

I think they are both worth your time.

The main difference is likely the BAE 146 has an FMC and this makes navigation much easier. The F-28 is VOR / ILS only.

My favorite of the two is the Fokker. It speaks to me 😉

I believe the F28 has a GNS530 option

As the others said. Both oldschool pilots planes. Both need your full attention not like the highly automated modern tubeliners. Both can be flown VOR/NDB only. The 146 has the option to disable the FMC, the Fokker can follow on the other hand flightplans in the GNS if you like. I personally find the 146 more complex as it has quite some more systems to play with including the TMC as an ancient very limited predecessor of an autothrottle. But the 28 is a lot of fun also just cause it is so basic in its oldschool cockpit. Both have their quirks and things you have to learn. The EFBs are ok and support simbrief import including payload and fuel and navigraph charts options. Which in case of the Fokker is quite nice if you fly old style VOR/ILS approaches.

Personally I fly the 146 with the FMC (and still waiting for the update with the older universal fms that is still in the works) and the Fokker in ILS/NDB only.

Cheers T.

Both of these are great aircraft to buy, I own both.

Out of the two I’ve been most impressed by the handling both in the air and on the ground of the F28, it’s sublime.

Taxying isn’t something to normally get excited about but the F28 just feels like a real aircraft on the ground and trundles along at 5-10kts at idle with a heavy feel to it.

In the air the F28 is very stable and realistic in its handling.

The 146 has 4 sets of analog engine instruments so there’s a lot of moving parts which perhaps hits performance more than the F28.

The flight modelling on the 146 was initially at first release a little out in my opinion, in that it came in for an approach like a swept wing aircraft, slightly nose up. The real world 146 actually has a negative pitch angle while on the approach. From what I can see this has been addressed in updates to the flight modelling.

My favourite between the two real world aircraft would be the 146, I’ve a real soft spot for it , though I do also really like the F28. However in the sim it’s the F28 that I prefer , maybe because it’s a newer product it just feels more refined, not to say the 146 isn’t refined in any way, it’s a fantastic product you can’t go wrong with , but the F28 beats it in my opinion.

Both these aircraft have been developed by just flight after making research visits to the real aircraft to gather pictures, measurements, and sounds, you’re getting a real authentic flightdeck and aircraft whichever one you choose. The fact that they’ve put this effort into the development really shows through in their aircraft. Sitting on the F28 flight deck you can almost smell the strong coffee and cigarette smoke which would have been the prominent aromas in a jet of that era during its working life.

My only comment about the F28 is flying exclusively in VR I find the primary flight instruments look a little small , again as JF will have recreated the instruments off real world measurements I’ve no doubt they will be perfect down to the millimetre, however something in the translation to VR makes them appear smaller than I’d expect. No such issues with the 146 however. With a very large and smooth ADI.

At the end of the day it will come down to personal preference as both products are top notch you won’t go wrong whichever you choose.

Personally , having experienced the great flight dynamics of the F28 I’m really looking forward to the release of the F70/100, which I anticipate will become my instant favourite.

Both are excellent but the F28 is my favourite…as mentioned above, it actually succeeds in making really enjoy taxiing 😀

Just a fun aircraft overall, I’m also partial to rear engine t tails.
