December 4, 20232 yr So Buggati charge him £40K per year to service his Veyron. He asked them to look at a switch for the mirror. They quoted him £9,700. So he took it to someone he knew, and the switches came in packs of 5. Cost was 95p. Took the guy 25 mins to fit. Such things should be illegal. Edited December 4, 20232 yr by martin-w

December 4, 20232 yr Even Tesla rips off it's customers. Tesla estimate $16,000. Local garage fixed it for $700. https://www.thedrive.com/news/41493/teslas-16000-quote-for-a-700-fix-is-why-right-to-repair-matters Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

In the case of Tesla, I suspect a lot of it is because they don't want to mess with a damaged battery pack. Rich Benoit, featured in your article, set up the Electrified Garage, he has a channel on YT, I used to watch his videos. Rich buys flooded, damaged Tesla's and repairs them and repairs Tesla's cheaper than the manufacturer. How safe they are long term I don't know but I recall its a former Tesla engineer that does the repairs. I recall that one thing Tesla do with a car that's been unofficially messed with by an unauthorized person is to switch off fast charging. I guess they think that if a DIY person has messed with it then it may be dangerous during fast charging. Flies in the face of right to repair though. What bothers me is how they can charge $600 plus on annual maintenance when there's so very little to do on a service. 🤔 11 hours ago, qqwertz said: I think a Bugatti owner could cope ... Indeed... but is such a huge profit margin acceptable? I'm wondering that if indeed the cars are sold at a loss, they might do whatever they can to plough back some of that loss. https://www.technology.org/how-and-why/is-it-true-bugatti-had-loss-with-every-veyron-sold/ Quote Roughly a decade ago, the Wall Street research firm Bernstein Research released a report which was saying that Bugatti, along with its parent company Volkswagen, incurred a substantial loss of approximately $6.24 million for each Veyron sold. Then, the authors of this report admitted, that these figures should be approached with caution as their estimates were only rough approximations – although based on their best knowledge at the time.
December 5, 20232 yr Car dealerships will negotiate the price of a car and make less on the sale, but make up for it with the fees they charge for maintenance and repairs. When it comes to maintenance and repairs, you can take your car to an independent mechanic or take it to the stealership. December 5, 20232 yr You can't blame manufacturers for squeezing the last bit of profit out of the motorist, not when privately owned vehicles will soon be a thing of the past! At least in the UK, they are pricing us off the road by making private car ownership, at least for the masses, an impossible dream. What with ULEZ at £12 per journey and Insurance premiums more than doubling (my car insurance went from £350 per year to £1065! And one quote from a well known broker came in at £3300!!) and I have held an HGV (truck) licence for over 40 years. I suppose it's all part of the "You'll own nothing and be happy" plan. The things are so unique. A basic oil change costs 20K, still vastly over priced, but you pretty much have to pull the car to bits to get at the 12 drain plugs.

At 63 I paid something like 300 for my Mazda CX5. Car insurance is dirt cheap where I am, Guernsey. My daughters Fiat 500 hybrid costs her under 300 and its her first car.

When my Prius went out of warranty I bought a 3 year Toyota warranty extension and service package for 300 dollars. I bring it in every 3 months for service. So far it has needed no repairs. A few months ago the battery died. AAA came to my place and gave me a jump and started it. I took it right to the Toyota dealer and they checked it out and charged the battery and it didn't cost me a cent. Even took me home in their shuttle van and came and got me when the car was ready. December 5, 20232 yr Correction. Looking over my records I paid 600 dollars for 3 years extended warranty and free service. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
