  • The only way I got my wife to understand is putting the VR glasses on her while in the cockpit. When she saw that, she said, "this is cool". 😄

Who said anything about being forced into anything? This is an observation.

  • I despise subscriptions. The only subscription I have at the moment is navigraph because it provides so much value. There are a lot of application these days that should be a one purchase that. At thi

Some one asked what is the alternative? Well if you look hard and long enough you can actually access via the various regulatory authorities all over the world the charts and documents you need - and they are current! I just download the charts (including ENR stuff) as PDF's then access it via AVITAB or whatever as I need it. I did notice with the last version of AVITAB all this stuff started to appear when I clicked on the airport search function and it would show charts etc but the latest version that has all disappeared again.

Like the way you guys are sharing our partners nonchalance about our hobby or past time. I am well used to that because as a former real world aviator, Aviation was always looked upon like one had a mistress of sorts on the side. I guess it was the days away, strange work hours etc not to mention the other stuff relating to tests, checks, roster changes etc etc. I can recall one day when it got a little heated - well the reality was it was my living and that is the way it was if you work in Aviation - your a travelling shift worker. I must admit now and then she takes a lot and well she is blown away by XPlane's reality (just like a photograph she will say). I particularly like to have the local area up and demonstrate how far this computing hobby has come when she can look out our windows and see the cloud and rain and then go to the sim - same locality and there it is!

As for subscriptions - well due to the terrible state of internet services in rural Oz I am always download limited and it is basically a subscription service there as well, that is about as much as I can suffer - the very reason why MSFS is not used by me ever - I have not nor ever will have the download capacity or bandwith to handle a streamed Sim! Tired of being badgered by every other service on the net wanting you to have an account, subscribe, paywall etc etc. Well price the software accordingly and I will use it (like the models etc for the sim I buy) but I am not paying a tithe for the pleasure of using it.

I used to do that too, for most of my simmer life actually...

Some years ago there was also Jeppesen and I used it and was great then... But I have been conquered by the functionality of Navigraph Charts... But yes, it's too expensive for an hobby !!!

Earlier today I asked exactly about that alternative in the "Hangar Chat" forum :

but got no answers so far, so, thank you for the thumbs up! Will surely give it a try 🙂

Navigraph is interesting case for "subscription based",

For FMS database, you can subscript for 28day update, but you can also buy one data, or just quite your subscription and still able use it indefinitely after downloaded. so that's not what I'll call the modern gaming cancer type of subscription mode.

But as for charts, I believe you have to keep subscription and only have access to the latest set? then that's the "malignant" one IMO....

Also, the Navigraph Charts app which connects to the sim will stop working if you don't pay the subscription. There are free alternatives, e.g. You can get the sectional, airport and IFR charts for the US for free (and many other places in the world), however it's the convenience of having it all in one place and not needing to search it out. Hardly an issue if it's just a hobby and I wouldn't be worried flying with charts that are months/years out of date.

I actually find it's harder to sync all scenery/navaid/navdata to a given time than just the most recent one, That's when I sold to navigraph....
