HDR mode in MSFS

because with HDR you don't need filters.

Please explain how you came to this conclusion if you will.

Years of using Reshade/GEforce filters in SDR to try and get a realistic display in MSFS.  As soon as I got an HDR600 monitor I saw exactly as you described - neon colours. over bright etc.  It became apparent to me that HDR doesn't require filters because of its increased range of colours/brightness/contrast.  This is even more apparent now I have a 1000 nit monitor.

I think this means it's not a trivial thing to go back and forth between SDR w/ Detail and HDR w/ Detail:  the windows desktop ends up getting washed out flat.

Probably it’s necessary to have HDR in MSFS and Win11 set the same. I’m not at all seeing anything remotely neon, cartoonish-like with HDR.

I’ll add that when I returned to HDR after a few months with SDR, I had initially forgotten that I still used my filters tuned for SDR. Everything looked extremely weird until I removed the filters.

I've just done that and it's much better now, switching between domains that is.  Still, adding the Details filter is a good thing.  When I now toggle between my method and HDR w/ the Details filters sliders dialed down a little the result is very similar and I would say SDR w/ Details and desktop contrast dialed well up is so close it's worth considering the loss of ability to take screenshots and videos.   Something's still off though as some glass cockpit text that should be green is now yellow, including PMDG 738 HUD....and it's NOT the Details filter.\

TBH I definitely need more air miles to decide if it's a good thing or not.

I'm currently in the sim, having a look at the details filter (with SDR). I'm confused how I tune these settings (sharpen, clarity, HDR toning, bloom).

Just leave them at default for now and make sure you've set desktop color settings as I described.  You should notice increasing HDR toning lightens up the cockpit dash.

How many local dimming zones does your monitor have?

As mentioned above:

  • VESA DisplayHDR 600 (56 Block Local Dimming)
  • Contrast Ratio:  1000:1 (Typ.)

Allright, with your settings is not too bad. Just needs some getting used to. I'm leaving sharpen at 0 for now.

Sharpen is 50 here.   I see the benefit of HDR for sure but need to continue to fine tune some things.  DO try the Detail filter WITH HDR that is what I'm using and it's quite good.

What might need changed to get what used to be a nice bright green text in PMDG HUD and glass cockpit and now is yellow/beige.  Is there a COLOR calibration tool perhaps?  The Win 11 HDR Cal tool is pretty much contrast/brightness related.

Did you reset the NCP desktop color settings to default? It occurred to me that it might not be a good idea for me to use your settings there as our monitors are different.

I’ve applied the details filter to HDR and it’s actually not bad. I would say a bit better than HDR with no filters. My settings are very modest though:

Sharpen 0, Clarity 17, HDR toning 13, bloom 0

More than that and it looks overly bright to me.

How are you guys applying these GFE filters? I want to try out the details filter like what Cpt_Piett did to see if I can make my HDR look any better.

You need to have GeForce Experience installed. When in the sim, hit alt-z, then select filter. Add the details filter. Then change the settings according to your preferences.

If you can’t figure it out, see if you can find a YouTube tutorial.

If you have used the Microsoft HDR calibration tool, brightness would have been tuned to give you max brightness in MSFS.  A filter that adds brightness will undoubtedly make it look overly bright.

Surely HDR toning is meant for an SDR display?

Well, after fiddling with HDR a lot yesterday woke up set to fly KSEA KSLC and my sense is it's more unnatural so back to SDR for now.  The key is to set Contrast up to at least 60 or 70 and the result in my screen is it's in the ballpark of what HDR offers, amply bright and easy to make too bright and contrast is great.

Plus as mentioned no can do screenshots and I do this quite a bit, at least I haven't figured out how to make them look as they should when captured in HDR.
