February 9, 20251 yr If I buy a 43" inch 4K TV for MSFS2020 (and later MSFS2024) will it make any difference if the TV has a 120Hz refresh rate instead of 50HZ? The 60hz tv's are considerable cheaper than the 120Hz's but will I notice the difference? Jorn Lundtoft I don't always stop and look at airplanes.........Oh wait, Yes I do. February 9, 20251 yr A thread on using big screen TV's for MSFS might be useful. Big meaning 40 to 50 inches. Personally I'm more blown away by wide screen, rather than big screen. wide= 21:9. normal=16:9. A common 34" wide screen (21:9) is nice, but the height is reduced and so the image isn't that big, but wide is really nice. So, a 40" wide screen is exactly the same height as a normal 16:9 32" screen but wider. All the wow of a wide screen but not disappointing in square inches. So for instance the cockpit gauges don't look smaller than they do on a 32" screen. One of the bargains might be this one on Amazon. The Youtbe reviews of it are great! But it's only 1440p. 3440 x 1440 (21:9) https://www.amazon.com/INNOCN-Ultrawide-Monitor-FreeSync-Premium/dp/B09N3G9T16 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. February 9, 20251 yr The popular 34" widescreen (21:9): every cockpit gauge is smaller than they are on a popular 32" (16:9). A 40" widescreen (also 21:9) has the same size gauges as on the 32" 16:9. 21:9 widescreen does not have anywhere nearly as bad edge elongation distortion of a double wide 32:9 screen. 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. February 9, 20251 yr Author I do have a 32" monitor running in 2560 x 1440, but my eyesight isn't what it used to be, and I find a lot of the gauges are hard to read , so I figured (hoped) that a 43" might help. And I don't mind not running it in 4K, but only in 2K if that will help. If I'm totally wrong, please tell me. And no, I will not consider a wide screen. 🙂 Edited February 9, 20251 yr by jlund Jorn Lundtoft I don't always stop and look at airplanes.........Oh wait, Yes I do. February 9, 20251 yr Heres some advice ....forget the monitors and go and get a VR headset, if you want immersion VR is unbelievable experience if your pc can run it, I have a big monitor...only use it to set up the flight then I put the headset on.....incredible experience! If you can't currently attain that then getting a 120hz will offer you no discernable difference. Though if I'm being perfectly honest.. with 43" that's TV territory, at these price points why not just get a Pimax or a Quest 3? It's a wholly better experience than whatever size screen could ever provide, not even a curved monitor can recreate the visual depth that VR can provide. Edited February 9, 20251 yr by Lucky38i
February 9, 20251 yr Yeah, a lot of this is kind of beyond my knowledge. I have a 4k 60hz Gsync monitor from 2014 and while it looks alright....having a 4090 and all this technology confuses me. 60hz tv vs 120hz? It's unbeleivable that people before you missed this point and even recommended 120hz without asking the OP whether they are getting 120 FPS in MSFS. OP, if you get under 60 FPS in MSFS, it doesn't matter if you get a 60Hz, 120Hz, 240Hz, ... ... TV. They are all the same and the 60Hz TV will be just as good. Getting a TV or monitor with a higher Hz frequency than your MSFS FPS may be worthwhile if you plan to upgrade your computer one day to get more FPS out of MSFS, or if you are playing another game that has FPS that pairs with the TV's Hz frequency. i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM
February 10, 20251 yr Like mentioned before : if you van’t maintain 60 FPS then it is of no use buying a 120 hertz monitor. However, if you can have MSFS running at 30 FPS all the time and buy a 5000 series graphics card you could run it at 4x 30 FPS = 120 FPS. Or use Lossless Scaling at 4x ( might give artifacts )… 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
February 10, 20251 yr Author Okay, first I'll never get a VR set and though I have never tried it I have seen videos with it and it seems difficult to use knobs and buttons in the sim and I don't know if it's possible to use them when I'm wearing glasses. And they're still pretty expensive to invest in, since I'm a very casual simmer and only use it maybe once or twice a month. And it may sound silly, but I NEVER, and that's the truth, check what the Fps are. As long as it looks good and is smooth without stutters, I really don't care if it says 30 or 100. And with the limited use of the game, I don't intend to invest a lot of money in it, I actually bought a Thrustmaster TCA around 6 months ago, but haven't unpacked it yet so I'm not that serious about it, and that's why a cheap 43" 60Hz TV may be enough for me. Thanks for all the input and advice guys. Jorn Lundtoft I don't always stop and look at airplanes.........Oh wait, Yes I do. February 10, 20251 yr I'm running my Flight Sim PC into a 38" 4K TV at 60hz (see my pic on the left) and it provides excellent performance. I'm using a similar graphics card to you. I was going to buy a new large monitor but I don't think I'll bother now as I like the extra screen height with the TV. I run it at 4k most of the time with MS2024 on high or ultra depending on my flying location. So I think you'd be just fine saving your money and using a 60hz refresh rate monitor unless you think it will provide additional performance benefits on your system. I get 120 fps+ most of the time and haven't noticed any visual issues. MS2024 is (for now..) smooth as butter on my PC. Re the comment on VR - I've tried it in the past with other games but am fine using Smooth Tracker via the app and camera on my phone. VR made me feel nauseous for some reason! Maybe it needs to be set up more precisely on my system. Edited February 10, 20251 yr by TrafficPilot Chillblast Core i5 14600KF Liquid Cooled RTX 4070 SUPER 32GB RAM. Internet: 1 Gig Fibre. The 60hz tv's are considerable cheaper than the 120Hz's but will I notice the difference? I have a 55" Sony X90K that is GSYNC compatible, I chose Sony as they already have very good motion handling and GSYNC works well on this TV. As others have said if you can only achieve up to 60 FPS then it is pointless buying a 120Hz TV. I run 100Hz refresh rate @4K and lock my FPS in RTSS to 72 and this gives me incredibly consistent FTV which results in a very fluid sim experience. If I unlock my FPS in less demanding scenarios then the sim will automatically be capped at 97 FPS. To be honest I see no real value in doing this as it just forces my hardware to work harder. I do have a decent PC and can run Ultra settings and unless I am flying out of a major airport like IniBuilds EGLL with traffic then I can pretty much sustain 72 FPS everywhere and if they do drop a but then GSYNC takes care of this. I do use the amazing AutoFPS and I am still running MSFS 2020. Looking at your PC Specs your CPU is a generation newer than mine but I have a stronger GPU. What sort of consistent FPS can you achieve with this PC?
