24 has become somewhat playable now

Featured Replies

My experience with 24 up until about a week ago has been more or less seeing how fast i can get a CTD after loading it up. I would randomly get crashes just about anywhere, but in the last week i have only had two. Feeling like living dangerously, i decided to give career another go. To my surprise, career has been pretty stable, and pretty well done. Sure the dialog is bad, and there are plenty of bugs, but overall it is playable, and enjoyable. I have only lost progress once, but even then i didn’t lose everything.

I haven’t made any changes to my pc, so maybe they are tweaking the backend? No idea, but my pc has been rock-solid with everything except 24. Still a long way to go, but i give them credit for putting together a decent career mode.

With 2024, the majority of small updates are done on the cloud side.  They have definitely improved stability and CTD's since RTM.

I haven’t tried career mode yet, but 2024 has been very stable for me post week 1 after Nov 19th.

Hopefully things will continue to improve now that SU1 is live.

@RobJC your computer may have some hardware defect. All my games, including MSFS 2020, were working for me as well but MSFS 2024 was CTDing on me. Turns out I had defective ram in the end, you can read about my story here:

The bottom line is, if MSFS 2024 is CTDing on you, and you are not using incompatible add-ons, and your Windows isn't corrupted and you didn't corrupt your NVidia drivers, then you could have defective hardware. MSFS 2024 Free Flight (not Career Mode) is pretty stable if you have a medium spec PC or above, and you aren't using any incompatible add-ons.

As my post above shows, even MemTest one year ago showed my RAM passed the test. But the computer shop discovered I had defective RAM in the end, something that MemTest did not show.

My 2024 started crashing regularly recently so I followed your advice to use MemTest.  MemTest has found a memory error. I have 32Gb of ram now, but have ordered 64Gb.

I'm hoping that fixes things and it is not a motherboard issue.

Nice, good to see you figured out what the problem was! Yeah, MemTest is good at finding errors in your RAM, especially if you let it do an overnight test, and let the test run to completion.  It's how I figured out that my computer shop originally overclocked my RAM with respect to what my CPU could handle.

Chances are, if your MemTest fails, you will CTD with MSFS.  And it appears that MSFS 2024 stresses your hardware even more than MSFS 2020 does.

I don't want to go into details because I have been disappointed a lot with MSFS 2024. However, this SU1 seems running well and smooth, and I see a very promising figures in my GPU load and temp. I just hope they have partially "optimized" VRAM although unannounced officially.

It could be a RAM issue, so i will test my RAM today. Thanks! But i am skeptical for two reasons. For one, 24 has been very stable the past week. Prior to that i would get crashes just loading the sim, or clicking a menu option. It was random, in the sense of what caused the crash, but it always happened within a few minutes. The last week i have run without issues for hours. I also have no crashes with 2020 or anything else i am running. I also have no add-ons running. The sim has just become very stable over the past week. My guess is one or more of the crashes i was experiencing was addressed with the beta update, or by a backend patch. But again, i will check my RAM. Thanks.

Yup, if it's random, then it really can be a RAM issue.

It was the same for me. I could run MSFS 2020 and there was no problem. I could run any other game, and there was no problem too. And I wasn't using any add-ons for MSFS 2024 when it CTDed on me.  And my RAM even passed MemTest, although that MemTest was a year ago.  But somehow, MSFS 2024 managed to take advantage of my defective RAM, that even MemTest could not find problems with (unless my RAM became defective in the year since I did the MemTest).  The computer shop used some other software to detect my RAM was defective and I was lucky to be under warranty, and the computer shop gave me new RAM.  Now MSFS 2024 runs fine with the new RAM the computer shop gave me.

Okay i have been testing my ram today and no errors. I asked ChatGPT if buggy software can lead to memory errors, even  if the ram itself is not bad. It said yes, which may or may not be correct. I guess i will just see if 24 crashes anymore, and if not like it was before maybe just assume i was suffering from one or more of the crashes they fixed? Everything else looks solid on my end, but like you said, the ram could still be faulty. Thanks again for the help!

How old is your FS2024 installation?  I have read some reports that if you downloaded FS2024 back when it was released, and are having CTD, to do a re-install. Due to the server issues they had back then, it was possbile to have corupted files.

Good news is, MSFS 2024 is easy to re-install.  Might be worth a shot.  Of course, if you have some bad ram, as indicated above, and that could also be your issue.

I really have only been using free flight, just like I did in 2020, and it has been very solid for me.

Interesting. Okay thanks if CTDs do continue I will try that.

Nvidia drivers have also been a bit of a mess since the release of the 50 series. Plenty of discussion on the Nvidia forums, but one post that stood out in particular talked about how their card (I think it was a 40 series) had larger voltage drops with one of the 572 driver versions which caused some instability. I've been dealing, but I've been having random issues with videos freezing in Chrome/Edge and also had some random reboots for the first time ever in 2024 a few weeks ago. Could be a different hardware/software issue, and haven't had a reboot since messing with some BIOS settings, but I can't help but look at all the other complaints of the Nvidia drivers online and think they may have something to do with it.

People are generally in agreement that the 566 version of the drivers have been more stable than the 572, so worth a shot messing with your drivers if you're still having issues.

Funky, I just updated the drivers but I will keep that in mind as well!

Played a few hours yesterday. Zero crashes. Memtest checked out fine. No errors. At this point i am leaning towards they fixed whatever bug/bugs were crashing my system. I am only in the career so not sure how stable it is outside that portion of the sim.
