As IRL pilot...one of the reasons why I love Xplane so much is the realistic depiction of haze. It is very realistic and adds depth to the atmosphere.  My understanding is that the GFS GRIB files

Add-ons are the Map enhancement Tool, Global Forests, SIM Heaven & Live traffic.  I increased colour vibrance and turned on Auto HDR for X-Plane.

I guess VisualXP is still popular, but the reason I am checking out XP12 again is for the cloud upgrades, so I won't be installing that yet

I've seen references to "Global Forests" from various users / friends and am tempted to try it one day.

When I installed SimHeaven X-WORLD Sceneries though, there was that mandatory "X-WORLD Vegetation Library XP12". Wonder if they're compatible ?

Yes no issues, I use Global Forests - makes a difference to get tree landscape coverage more accurate over the world. Installed out of my custom scenery with a symbollic link. I don't use Sim Heaven all over however not in OZ or Oceania or the US only in Europe, Asia and Africa. Sim Heaven does not do it in the Australian, Pacific and Oceanic regions due to lack of suitable house objects etc - for example swiss chalet houses in PNG or Grain Silos in Tonga, not really! I found some XP11 broad area sceneries for Australia (VOZ etc) are more accurate and realistic and then there are various specially made addons for other Pacific Islands (Like CDB's Samoa and Vanuatu). Mr SimHeaven is aware of the limitations but not idea if there will be a major upgrade in that regard at a later date!

I have installed Global Forests with SimHeaven. Big Difference.

SimHeaven and Global Forests work well together.  You just make sure Global Forests is below any SimHeaven sceneries in the scenerypacks.ini.  You disable the SimHeaven forest layer in each scenery so that just the Global Forest trees are visible.

I have yet to see anything that clear in XP12 over the UK yet.  I a couple of days since I re-installed XP12, every flight has almost been foggy the haze is so thick.

You will not see more than 14.902 statute miles of visibility if you are using "download real weather".

You can let the download run, then - when it is finished - switch to "manual weather" and manually jack up the visibility to your liking. The only downside is that weather will be the same wherever you fly and not change after you switch to manual.

Now I am not sure I would call 15 sm (ca. 22km) "foggy".

This is the haze in my current flight over the south UK. It does look excessive considering the weather today.

So visibility between 3 and 7km

that isnt excessive enough for 3km, 6 to 10km is MVFR:

https://www.thinkaviation.net/levels-of-vfr-ifr-explained/

you can measure it in flight by looking for a point in front of you that is just on the edge of visibility then timing how long it takes to get there.

you should also be able to improve it by climbing higher

Not at the moment - mostly sunny spells and good visibility.  Where I took the screen shot it was mostly clear with good visibility IRL.  Over my boat in the Midlands the weather is quite sunny, but in the sim it is gloomy.

Foggy was tongue in cheek.  Turning real weather off to get realistic visibility is a no go for me.  Also a no go if visibility is never more than 14.9 miles - that isn't real weather.

I haven't gone anywhere ☺️  I'll be testing XP12 out for a long while yet.  There is plenty to like with the weather and lighting.
