A week is enough to make XP12 my sim of choice.

You LEFT us?!?

Just kidding.

XP12 with the latest beta has really come back for me as well.  I'd say I'm using XP and MSFS 2024 almost 50/50 now.  I couldn't leave MSFS 2024 with the incredible avionics from working title, as I really enjoy the that part of flight simulation.  But being an X Planer since version 9 I'm always aware of what each sim provides.  I basically stayed away from XP12 at the beginning because of 5 reasons:

The atmosphere/lighting/minecraft clouds in RTM was just way off

My trees had giant square patches all over (apparently due to poor data)

The lack of a simple streaming ortho setup

No TDS GTNxi - sure there was RXP but they didn't have updatable navdata and charts

Poor anti aliasing (apparently with nvidia gpus)

As we now know the atmosphere and lighting is totally adjusted and it's in a much better place!  From medium to far distances, the clouds in XP12 smoke the ones in 2024.  Up close, 2024 still wins - as the clouds are lacking any details in xp.

I finally found Orbx Global Forest v2!  What a change!

XP Map enhancement is my go-to streaming app of choice (I use the free version but may invest into the higher res version) - they've fixed a lot of the lower res areas with recent updates.

TDS came out with the GTNxi for XP11/12!

This last one - I've seen great pics with crisp image quality - but I find it difficult to obtain that on my own machine.  I run at 1440p and the jaggies are really bad especially on metallic surfaces/leading edges of wings and also in cockpits with square gauge bezels such as the Torquesim Cirrus lineup etc - and in VR it gives me a headache.  I wish they'd use TAA.  It's not perfect but my image quality/clarity is much better in msfs 2024.

I'd love to find out how to get non-jaggy screenshots (and in flight visuals), I swear I've tried all the combinations but I cannot seem to get smooth lines.

Apparently this won’t be possible until they switch to motion vectors?

That is annoying - I just left a bright and sunny California desert to a very murky Los Angeles area.  I am getting nice sharp images at 4K. Another thing I am impressed with in XP12 are the shadows - much darker than MSFS 2024.

What has happened to me?

I just watched a couple of MSFS 2024 videos and I didn't like the look of the graphics!  There obviously are some plus points, but overall  it doesn't look (or indeed fly as well) as XP12, now I have it configured and running smooth.

A week ago I thought 2024 could not be beaten.

I can fully understand your situation because I was in that situation about a year ago.

I was a hardcore MS flight simulator fan for the last 20 years, but at last year I was tired of the frequently releases of new city updates, photogrammetry updates and new missions.

I have to say I was never a fan of orthophoto textures – to the contrary, I like syntetic textures more than orthophoto. I miss textures like “Ground environment” for P3D or FSX.😉

So I had decided to make a comparison between MSFS and XP12, and I had installed the XP12 Demo. I was amazed by the overall look of the lighting and the living scenery (e.g. trains) in XP12. Moreover the clouds looked more natural to me. In MSFS I always got the feeling that all clouds are based on cumulus clouds. Then the street lights – in XP12 there are really lamps and not light balls in the air. And that all was over a year ago by using the default scenery.

So I had decided to switch over to XP12 completely. But I regularly take a look at the MSFS 2024 development – so about a week ago, as I reinstalled my MSFS 2024 version again. But it lasted not long for my decision to uninstall it again.

The only thing that makes me thoughtfull, is the release of a new big airport for MSFS, which could be important for me (Aerosoft EDDF, EDDL). These airports look so nice. I wish the developers would create these airports for XP too. But then I think, the default gateway airports in XP12 are really looking nice. Take a look at the default airports in MSFS.😉

In MSFS I only used addon payware airports.

At the end in XP12 you see progress of things you really need as a flight simmer like clouds, lighting, ATC with SIDs and STARs, great payware aircraft and so on.

But I think I will further keep an eye to the development of MSFS…

At the moment I am really satisfied with SimHeaven, GF2, Traffic Global and ToLiss. And there is one point that is really important to me – the simplicity of the installation of addons – simply copy and paste into the XP12 folder.😉

Patric……..I could not agree with you more on what you say, I too am keeping my eye on fs24, I fire it up for an hour or so and then I lose interest and keep going back to XP12, and thus as been going on for quite some time now ……about 6 months ago it was the other way around, I’d fly fs20/24 and keep my eye on XP12 😄🤣 ……I expect long term both sims will improve but it’s the simplicity of installing scenery, aircraft and the ‘feel’ of flying in XP12 that I really really like and the aircraft what I absolutely love is the Challenger 650 from Hotstart, I fly it all the time every day and follow the routes flown by Netjets, just the best! 🛫👍

Enjoy!

For instance for flying and helicopter I can never load MSFS so inferior to xPlane it's rotary flight dynamics are...

I know these two airports, but I have read many negative feedback from the Aviotek EDDF scenery. And in terms of EDDL - I am always unsure about this developer regarding a purchase. Moreover it is a XP11 scenery, and I am afraid the lighting on the airport is not working correctly.

But I have bought the Aerosoft EDDF v2 (XP11 version) scenery a few days ago by using my reward points, and it is not that bad.😉

I would say its ok as well since I have that too. lol  I was noting that that an XP12 version was available but was not aware of the issues.

Someone just posted on the other side that MK Studio just release EDDL for 2020 and 2024. MK studios use to make scenery for X-plane and often port their offerings. It is a shame that they stop doing it and IMO too premature now that we are recently seeing a new found interesting in Xpane by many who own MSFS. They manage to clear all their X Plane scenery but still offer scenery for P3D, go figure.

Some impressions of my evening flight, I have just finished, by using the ToLiss A321 from LEAL to EDDF.

Yes, the approach to EDDF on yesterday was so great.

At first there was the really nice night lighting of the scenery of Frankfurt and surroundings as I left the cloud layer, and then I have experienced the great night lighting of the Frankfurt airport.
OK, it seems like some outer parking areas are not illuminated correctly but the biggest part of the main airport area looks really great - and we are speaking of a XP11 airport.😉

I slowed down my taxi speed to take a look at the great lighting of the airport, and I have choosen one of the farthest gates - so I needed to taxi through the whole airport area.😉
