Reverb G2 not obsolete in Windows 11

If this happens I'd be a happy camper. I certainly miss VR flying, hasn't been the same since my G2 became obsolete.

Ah ha! I always wondered why HP didn't do something like this themselves. It would have been a cost thing for them since it couldn't have been difficult.

I'm sticking with WMR though (Radeon driver here), for as long as I can get it. I went into Windows 11 services.msc and disabled Windows Update. From what I've read online the 24H2 update will kill WMR on my machine.

According to video, OASIS driver being developed is by the same guy who made OpenXR Toolkit.

Well ill be! Maybe should have kept my old G2 after all!

Great news for those who have one!

there might be another wmr replacement coming too. At the time there was no mention of steam, so I'm guessing it's a different one

This is indeed great news - thanks for sharing.  Although, I never had a problem stopping Win11 updates before the dreaded 24H2.  It's locked at 22something and my Reverb's work just fine, as does Windows11.  No need for Microsoft to intervene at all.

I've got a bad feeling that MS aren't going to take no for an answer:

https://www.pcworld.com/article/2772031/windows-11-now-auto-downloads-the-24h2-update-whether-you-want-it-or-not.html

I've disabled Windows Update from the services.msc dialog but it keeps returning to Manual (trigger start), which is at least better than auto update. So I then entered a new key in the registry setting NoAutoUpdate to true, but I have a suspicion that the 24H2 update will ignore this.

I might consider getting a cheap Nvidia card (RTX 5070) if mbucchia can't make a Radeon compatible driver for the G2, but I'd rather stick with my 6900 XT. I wait for news with dread and hopes entwined.

Have you tried the freebie app known as InControl ?  One button suppression of Microsoft's updates.

I highly recommend this solution if you don't want Windows to auto-update.   Works like a charm.

MajorGeeks have a great reputation, they helped me out with some malware a few years ago, but I'm enjoying a little fiddle with the registry at the moment which is a skill worth knowing.

I'm setting TargetReleaseVersion to true and TargetReleaseVersionInfo to 23H2 which some research promises to be an uncompromising solution to the problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If that works and gets you to 23H2, please report back if you dont mind.  I'd like to get to that release but I am reading that MS has removed all of those prior versions except 24H2.

Yeah, setting the TargetReleaseVersion to true (it's actually Hex 1) will bring you up to 23H2 from an earlier version if that's the one you specify. This page explains how it works but the writer goes on to claim that it won't work in Windows 11 Home edition which is not true. He uses the Group Policy editor which is only available in higher versions of Windows, but creating and editing keys in Regedit works in the Home edition just as well as this page explains.

Two thoughts:

This driver essentially will convert WMR devices into SteamVR devices, which as a G2 user is excellent!

I just hope that MS doesn't stomp on this project claiming a copyright/patent infringement.
