Nah, then we would we end up with subpar service like in Europe.

There no tipping culture in Japan either. You wanna compare service levels in Japan and the US?

Edit: and what extra service does tipping on an e-commerce site encourage?

  • They’re asking if customers would like to give them extra cash for no extra service. It seems like a daft encroachment of US tipping culture where it’s really not warranted.

There may be no harm in it, but I find it a bit crass to ask for tips. Oh, and whilst we are on the subject, restaurants in the US should pay their staff a decent wage rather than expecting them to "m

However, it had no effect on my decision to buy, nor will it affect a future purchase decision.

Agreed, if it’s a default option on a 3rd party vendor site then it might be an overreaction to stop buying totally. Just not from that site.

Really don’t like this trend though. Makes you feel like a cheapskate if you don’t tip, and even if it’s voluntary now, as the trend takes hold it may not be in the future.

Actually, that’s useful information if it’s the e-commerce site that does it and it’s an opt out that they forgot.

But saying ‘Who cares? Only AVSIM.’ when the very first post is a link to a fairly energetic Reddit discussion?

You don't need three separate posts to reply to multiple people.

That’s because the Japanese have a strong work ethic stemming from a culture that values honor and abhors shame. 😉

What’s the average work week in Europe these days and how many weeks of paid holidays are you up to now?

True. What’s maddening is that so many “service fees” have become mandatory in other products (concert tickets being particularly egregious).

here? Well it’s optional. And fwiw, I don’t think for 1 second that it’s a “default feature accidentally left enabled”.

nothing nefarious or sneaky, mind you.

if it stays enabled, we’ll know there’s an appreciable number of people who DO tip. Be interesting to see if so.

Please see your own post above about tropes and stereotypes.

That wasn’t a criticism, but instead a compliment to the Japanese.

Tropes and stereotypes reside in fetishes as much as they do in critiques. I’m not a total stranger to Japanese customs myself (😅) and would say differences in service levels at restaurants are less a product of social honour codes than direct symptoms of payment cultures.
