In the UK, where we are, tipping is usual, in my world at least, for good service.
My father told me that in a restaurant, for example, 10% of the total bill is about right and
I have continued his good practice.
I have also tipped taxi drivers and on a couple of coach holidays that went well, the driver
was given a quite large tip, provided by contributions from all the passengers.
Where there is no service, such as an online purchase, it seems inappropriate.
If the offer to tip was instead at their forum, where someone may have gone out of their way
to help out with a problem, then it might seem less out of place.

I always tip for good service. I really object when it is expected even for bad service. I was once chased down a street in Phoenix by a barber who gave me a bad haircut and had a really bad attitude. I don't care how low your basic wage is, tips have to be earnt.

Nah, then we would we end up with subpar service like in Europe. Been to Europe more times than I can count, and restaurant service is generally very poor!  Much prefer to motivate service staff by them knowing they will get paid based on how well they perform their job. Most of the service staff in the US prefer tipping because they can make much more money than they would ever get through an hourly wage here.

If it is a tip, in the USA, they do not have to pay taxes on it.  That is why you will see more and more of this.

Ridiculous statement. For a start, Europe is not a country. In my country, service usually is very good. And when it's good, I give a tip.

Luckily, people here don't need tips, they get paid sufficiently.

Right...all 12 of you.

And many Americans say Europe rather than specify a European country because individually they're tiny - most European countries are smaller than all but a handful of US states.

But wait, there's more.....

Handling fee added.

Administration fee added.

Environmental surcharge added.

Many Americans say Europe because they have no idea what the names of the individual countries are.

In US tips are offers is everywhere. While it may be annoying for foreigners there is absolutely not obligated to pay unless you receive some kind of service and you feel like rewarding someone. Not sure what is a fuss about it! LOL

You are not obligated indeed but in my experience, best not go back to the same diner tomorrow if you didn't leave a tip today.
