OpenSquawk – free AI ATC for MSFS, testers wanted

Featured Replies

Hi all,

built‑in ATC in MSFS is limited, and most AI ATC add‑ons are commercial and cloud‑hosted. We’re building OpenSquawk, a free, open‑source AI ATC that runs entirely locally. Speech‑to‑text, decision logic and text‑to‑speech all run on your machine, so there are no recurring server costs and no subscriptions.

Our prototype listens to your push‑to‑talk, applies real ATC phraseology and gives dynamic instructions back via realistic synthetic voices. It currently supports MSFS via SimConnect; X‑Plane support is planned.

We’re looking for sim pilots to test the closed alpha and give feedback. If you’re interested in a free, offline AI ATC alternative, join the waitlist at opensquawk.de

OK, signed up. Will be interesting to see how this pans out. A local LLM?

OOohhh, this may shake the market up for us consumers.

Nice, almost like CrewChief for the Skies! Will keep an eye on this as the AI ones scare me 😄

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

Curious about the CPU resources on a machine already running MSFS to simultaneously do local AI compute cycles for ATC as well...

Have a Wonderful Day

yes thats what im fearing too, but acutally it went surprisingly well with first tests. maybe bringing your own openai api key might be an option for some people ..

I have a fairly powerful machine so would definitely be interested in running this locally. I run Ollama with a bunch of models and it works pretty well up to about the 7B mark.

problem is i still need support for development of the live atc feature since its a lot of learning by doing 😄

Can it be run on a different device on a local network?

Any initiative that could improve ATC is welcome. Specially for VFR pilots. What we are are so frustrating, depending on offer on the market, it could be a quizz: it's IFR only and/or too scripted and/or way-too-expensive and/or bugged...

yes, you'd just enter the ip of that device where your llm is running to lift the heavy working.
or you could run the whole server including the llm but like completely everything on a different device.

i think it might take up til mid 2026 until we see the plugins working locally and then a few more months for all the documentation to be that easy and well documented that it can feel intuitively. i totally see your point so thats fully on the roadmap.

well just for transparency the plan is to focus on ifr heavily at first. because when its more scripted its more reliable.

but i've seen okayish resulst qwith the chatgpt-oss 20B model on my macbook. so i think we could see more free vfr atc on a budget but i think its way sown the roadmap for now.
